Engine swaps

Just wondering about dropping a 283 in a 99 car, how much trouble will I be facing?

Thanks for any guidance

Quite a bit of work, but Gen1 SBC has been put in 4th gens a lot. Also, probably get more help in the 4th gen section here >> http://www.camaro5.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=34

This section is 5th gen Z/28 specific.

Depends on the Mods of the 283. Let's say you get it to make 165 HP you might need a weaker driveshaft. The 99 Shaft might be overkill for the application. Selling it on Craigslist could offset the cost of a nice set of plug wire looms or one of those Chrome Gas Pedals shaped like a foot. So there is a bright side.

Is the 283 Air Cooled?

I think I am as serious as you are for a 1st post...LOL...

Mtbiker, got to admit, it's a rather unusual question to ask on this forum in general, and on this sub-forum specifically. I'm sure someone would be willing to give you advice, but I'd suggest at least posting it on the Gen 4 forum.

Well..since I had a 376 in my 79, I'm pretty sure the modern stuff is plug and play. The OP juat needs to acquire the cruise package ( wiring) which allows him to integrate the 383 into the car. I'm assuming that the OP is either putting an HT383.

However if its an HT383..Chevy has its install kit: HT383 Install Guide-Chevy Performance

If its like the 79 Z/28 I put a forged-stroked 376 CI engine into......you'll spend a small fortune on the incidentals.

I am. I mean come on we put a man on the moon with less computer HP than a calculator. God created the welder and the grinder for a reason.

With a full set of Harbor Feights finest tools anything is possible. A 283 transplant is a much easier task the a kidney transplant. Just there might be more kidney donors available than 283 at this point after cash for clunkers.

That was my review. I am here to tell you after installing that Pedal on my Z was like adding PTM 6 if not 7. Looking at "Fuzzy Dice" next...but I don't want the Ice Mode issue associated with PTM 8.

I missed it, he wants to transplant a 283!! Duh.. I needed my glasses.

On a brighter note I had a '65 SS Impala for my first car....it was a "turbo fire" 283 putting out 195 hp 285 ft-lb. It could at least twist the wheels in a burn-out..barely. I do remember dingle balls & fuzzy dice around the top of the windshields...

Thanks to the "10 worst auto fads" for that memory

Fuzzy Dice were the first version of air bags,if you had enough of them in your car you had a better chance of surviving a crash.

There wasn't enough details in the fist thread. Im putting a 350 in an 89 Mazda. Its pretty much the same steps for all engine swaps.

You need to:
1. make mounts for the engine
2. make mount for tranny
3. have a drive line made
4. make mounts for radiator
5. figure out a fan
6. wire it and plumb it

If your really saying you want to put a 383 in a 99 LS Camaro. You simply call up Thompson Motor Sports and order an 383 for it. Remove the old engine, add the new engine, trailer it to a dyno and have it tuned. Really no harder then a stock engine swap.

Ask for Kyle.

I gotta agree..but REALLY if you're spending the $$ go ahead and get the $6,000 ST 383 connect and cruise @ 435 hp 445 ft lb..and your 99 is probably faster in the quarter mile not in the straights) as a gen5 ss, now handling is another matter.

My 79 was a dog in the corners; but could run consistent 125 to 126 mph qtr miles.

But given its a 99 camaro...it'll weigh in at 3400 to 3500 lbs, which at 7.81 l/hp would make it corvette coupe fast.

where I grew up in Irving texas, it might have gotten pot planted in your car by the crooked cop they caught back in the 70's that would do that.
