new windshield?

i just went to my dealer because there is a couple little things they need to fix

one was something we talked about before i even bought it, there was a rough scratched edge on the top of my windshield, nothing noticable without getting close to it

well they said it may not be under warranty to get an entire new windsheild but then she called someone and said i would have probably got a new one anyways, said GM already announced a recall of some sort on the windshields, said people are finding out they have hairline fractures in them or something

aynone heard about this?

If you bought her new the windshield should have been replaced before you left the lot.

I would think that's covered under bumper to bumper. But the problem now is... if you left the lot with it and your paperwork says AS IS... you may be stuck. It's a grey area they might try to swindle out of fixing for you. Depends on the dealer I guess.

If you are having your windshield replaced, the process takes roughly a hour to do. the car needs to sit for at least one hour before it is driven after the install (depending on the glue that is used), and no car washes for at least two days.

These are the rules i give my customers after I do a install.

I say the work takes roughly one hour, but different shops have different ways of doing things. I usually take no longer than one hour to do any job, most of the time it does not take that long. Hopefully your getting a experienced glass guy, and the job will be done correctly. Make sure you follow any and all instructions after the install it is very important.

I noticed a hairline fracture 2 months after I bought the car...it is very difficult to see and I just assumed it was a piece of spider web because that is what it looks like, 1/2 inch long and can only be seen just at the right angle and light so I hardly ever noticed it, hence, couldn't always remember its exact location. Anyway, 1/2 inch grew to 3/4 inch so I finally took a much closer look at confirmed a hairline crack in the glass. Showed it to dealer, dealer says it is not a stress crack therefore not covered under warranty. Told me to take car to the Glass place they use, Glass guy looks at it, slides flat razor on the crack and says it is not an impact crack, crack is in the glass, a factory defect. Went right back to dealer, dealer says, nope, looks like an impact crack, no warranty to replace. Well, I hardly drive the car and the crack is almost impossible to detect and not getting worse so I decided to wait til it gets really bad. So, hearing about GM acknowledging hairline cracks from manufacturing defect is good news to my ears.

look closely and follow the crack if there is anything in the line of the crack it is not a stress crack. if the crack is just a line with nothing in the line that is stress crack and that is a warrenty issue.

Wrong. Mine's been cracked for sometime, went in to get it looked at. It's at my cost, but it's due to it being from road debris. If it's of some odd nature then it would be.

FYI, you're looking at about $650 with labour to repair it. They recommend not getting anything but the factory windshields.

of course they recommend nothing other than factory glass, thats how they make money. just so everyone knows PILKINGTON is the factory glass, and you can get it aftermarket from your favorite glass shop. the only difference is it does not have the gm logo on it. and if your in Montana i can replace your glass for 450.00. if you want the gm logo it will be a bit more.

here are the pics of the factory glass installed in our cars and the aftermarket glass that can be purchased.
