Does anyone know what this sound is?
Update #2
Forgot to make the final update. The dealer found collapsed lifter and bent push rods. All replaced and seem to be alright. I put about 400 miles on it and I swear, I think the ticking noise is starting to come back. I can definitely hear it on a cold start....ughh.... Update #1 I'm at the dealership right now. I just took a drive with the technician and he says that it definitely sounds like that it is coming from the valvetrain. But he won't know for sure until he tears into it. I brought up that it might be a lifter problem and he told me that it should not be a lifter issue because it would have misfire codes. They said that it will take a few hours to see what's wrong with it and will give me a call about it later today. --------------- This loud ticking sound just started today when I got home. I have no idea what is it. The engine is a LS3 with 15k miles on it. There are no engine mods. It's so loud that you can hear it with all the windows up. This never happened until today so I don't think it's normal. The ticking increases as the RPM's increases. I took a video of it. You can hear the ticking at the start of the video but please watch the whole video especially the last 15 seconds when I roll the windows down as it is really evident that the ticking is not normal. Anyone else experienced this? Oh btw, when I popped the hood, it sounds like it's coming from the passenger side valve cover. But it's so loud that it's hard to say for sure. Let me just say this. It's so loud that it reverberates off the ground that you can hear it at rear exhaust. Now that's loud! http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature...&v=NXD8UmN32LE Last edited by Nessal; 12-04-2012 at 10:35 PM. |

RPM dependent...can you tell if it's coming from the engine? what were you doing when it started?

Nothing special. Just got home from getting groceries. I noticed it immediately as I was pulling down the driveway that leads to my garage. It was so out of the norm that my girlfriend and I both were like WTF is that sound at the same time. |

gotcha. well. you never came to a complete stop in the video? i'm assuming it still makes the noise at idle?

It's hard to tell from the video, but my first guess that it's an exhaust manifold leak.

Yes, it does it at idle as well but at a slower rate. As RPM increases, so does the tick. Last edited by Nessal; 10-14-2012 at 08:40 PM. |

Definitely sounded like a Manifold leak or Valve-train? Need video of it running and hood open with Video!

Sounds like an exhaust leak. Check all your bolts on you exhaust manifold. If they're good, check your donut gaskets where your pipe connects to the exhaust manifold. Almost sounds like part of that donut gasket is missing,I had the same issue with an old Monte Carlo years back. Blew a chunk right out of it!

I was going to do a video with the hood opened but I was afraid that people would get it mixed up with "injector tick" or "normal" valvetrain noise. The last thing I want to do is bring it to a dealer, especially after that whole ordeal with that guy getting his car abused. |

Welcome to the world of aluminum. Different expansion rates cause weird things.

If it's just a gasket leak, I'll probably just do the work myself. I hate bringing the car to the dealership because I just flat out don't trust them. Might be a good time for me to just get long tubes lol.
