Big Air Cone in stock intake box.

I decided to try a big cone air filter in my stock air box. I orginal tried an open big cone but was worried about the heat and dynamics of air flow. Plus, I don't want to spend $450 on an intake system that may or may not increase any performance. I truly wish I had easy access to a Dyno so I could prove a performance increase or not. I also understand that by changing the air flow to the Mass Air Flow which in turn may cause the ecu to read a false reading. Thus a tune is needed in my opinion even with an after market air intake system or my own self mod.

So, I decided to stay as stock as I can with exception of adding a big cone air filter and a small mod to the stock air box. In order to fit the new air filter in I had to cut about a six by six hole in the bottom of the stock air box. I then sealed the hole with aircraft duct tape . The filter fits in the stock box and I am able to close the box with a tight seal screwed down tight. I have had it in for a week now, no issues. Performance wise, not sure. (No Dyno) Seems fine with no lose of power in my opinion, but engine sounds louder when you step on the gas. When the OEM factory air box's comes out I may just get the air box parts if I am able to do that for the correct seal. I would rather self MOD then dish out hundreds of dollars.

Looks good, I don't blame you for not wanting to drop coin on a CAI.

FWIW on the performance aspect (in my case). I went to the track and tried all the variations....filter in place, filter removed, filter out with air box lid propped open....the car showed no difference in the time slips. GM did their homework on this setup and that is why I honestly believe they haven't released an aftermarket version yet, the one they've shown is purely bling IMO.

Thanks for the info, that was my next step. Sone sort of time trails with diff set ups.

Other then the change in pitch and tone, I have not noticed any power diff. I really can't believe the aftermarket Dyno runs when they show a PDF read out. A time trail lap wise would be good for me instead of a fan in front of the car. When you train a horse at the race track, you don't put him on a trendmill you get the trainer with a stop watch, just like the guys in pit lane. They time the car in action. Just my opinion.

That's a smart idea to try cuz Cold Air Intakes are very skeptical and I've tried them myself and didn't see much results in air flow afrer dynoing with a cold air intake attached . In my opinion a good tune will help more than any cold air intake . I have a 2016 2SS M6 and the only thing I've done is tune it and the car is much much more responsive and drives so much better. That's what I would recommend

What's the point of this really? Don't get me wrong, I dig the ingenuity...but don't really see a benefit here.

Yes you increased airflow through the filter itself, but overall your engine is not getting anymore air than before. That's because you still have the same restriction as you did before with the airbox. No matter how well your filter flows, the incoming air is limited by the opening within the airbox itself. So if you left those the same, then no more air is going into the airbox for the filter to ingest and thus get more air to the intake manifold.

You would've been better off with a drop in K&N filter which is what most folk do that don't want to spend the coin on a new whole new intake. That or hackup the stock airbox in strategic places to allow more air to enter into the box itself.

Actually it is a K&N drop in filter, but a larger one.

Best link to explain cold air intake.

Best link to explain cold air intake.

https://axleaddict.com/cars/Are-perf...t-do-they-work

I am staying with the stock box and drop in cone. BTW, the box is modified so I can get a bigger air cone in, not to suck up air from below. The waffle bottom of box was cut out just enough to put in the larger cone. Sealed with aircraft duct tape to make seal complete.

After reading link, I feel the air intake systems made by aftermarket companies don't really make much of a difference other then sound. My opinion.

You do realize that you revived a post from 10 months ago when the only CAI in town was the Mishimoto unit right ?

I'm sure you would be able to find multiple posts of guys experimenting in the earlier days of the new gen 6 Camaro release when the aftermarket support was not available, it has to been viewed in the proper perspective.....just saying.
