Powder Coat or Paint?

Having no experience with painting or powder coating wheels I come to you for advise.

"Toying" with the idea of EITHER painting or powder coating a set of aluminum wheels to match my Ashen Gray Camaro.

1. Which do you think would be so most durable and lasting process?

2. Any idea of the approximate cost for a set of wheels?

Please let me know what you know or especially what you have experienced, good or bad I value your input.

Thanks
Larry

My experience with powder coating and or painting wheels was when I priced out having a set of wheels done.Depending on if you have any scratches, chips & scrapes needed to be repaired, tires on or off the wheels, the quoted cost was $125 a wheel for painting.Powder coating color change was another story, tires have to be off the wheels.because of the 450 degree heat,by the time the quote was finished it was $900+ for the set.I ended up buying a new after market square set of 10x20 gold "Hurst"wheels, which were stolen last winter, new tires and locking lugs,That's another story.Call, text or email any of the wheel repair businesses, they'll enlighten you.Stay local,it could cost up to $50 a wheel to ship.... Good Luck!

I would powder coat them. They will last longer and the finish will be better for road wear.

I have done both. Having them painted was a quick turnaround, didn't have to unmounts tires and got the look I was going for but over time it did get nicks from daily use. Powder coating is more durable and will most likely be the more expensive option. If you just want to get a new look for awhile and don't daily it you may can get by painting them. If you plan to keep the wheels on it and want it to last I would suggest powder over paint.

Another alternative, plasti-dip. I had a set done a few years ago for $300. Multiple times on and off the car and no issues with peeling. And when you get tired of the color, dip them again.

These are new wheels, no tires mounted, no damage and yes I plan on staying local. Mine is also a square setup of 10X20. I am really thinking of going with a match to the vehicle color of Ashen Gray. Thank you very much for all the very informative advise.

I too thought powder coating would last longer and hold up better than the paint but "extremely" worried about damaging the finish when mounting the tires?

Any tricks of the trade when mounting?

We have a shop next to us that repairs wheels and does powder coating. They say the powder coating holds up a lot better.

Powdercoat is more durable. Your car is painted, no reason you can't paint the wheels. They will look better painted. If they aren't going to see salt or many trips down gravel roads I would paint them.

I had mine painted last year and have no regrets. No chips so far and they shine!

Powder coating a good option I had my stickers done a few years ago an no issues short of my wife curbing them because she couldn't see.
Powder coat shouldn't cost more than 75-100 bucks a wheel.
Mine was 250 since I knew the guy.

Powder coating is definitely more durable, but the wrong tech can surely screw it up. If you can get a shop that sells aftermarket wheels, they usually know how to avoid nicks. They might not know much else, but if they sell wheel and tire packages they are mounting tires on expensive wheels all day every day. Doing a set of ZL1 wheels was $340 at the shop I went to. Most of the powder coating shops around here focus on bikes and they wanted over $500.

I just got off the telephone with RGX, a powder coating company out of Wilmington, NC: One to two weeks turnaround, because the wheels are new with no tires mounted they will only charge me $175.00 "PER" wheel.... $700.00 for 4, I didn't expect that.
