Lsx 427
Have a couple of questions, Have a friend wanting to sale a LSX 427 short block with Lunati Crank, rods, and pistons..for 5 grand, short block has 5,000 miles on it assembly has 0 miles. Stock heads and pan should bolt right up right? Also throwing in Arp bolts and T18 melling hv oil pump. Questions are good deal? What else would i need besides better heads and a tune?

Assuming all is good, that is a good deal.
Different cam, and I wouldn't put stock ls3 heads on a 4.125 bore setup. It can work, but I would get some aftermarket heads ASAP, and a cam spec'd for a 427. Pan bolts right on. Oil pump should go right on assuming it has the correct short crank. Make sure the crank is correct for your application. Same reluctor and snout length or that is a real pain to fix.

Even stock LS7 heads would be better, no?

For power, yes, for reliability, no.

The price is nice if you want to go heavy with a LSX iron block the question is why 5000 miles on the block and not with those parts.... ? just the bare block is like 2200 and can be made into a 500 cube stroker, so maybe someone went Dart block instead and pulled the internals? I bought a 428 stroker from Jerry at SAG performance he is on Ebay selling strokers you should maybe talk to him. I went new g.m. aluminum block as I am a daily driver and the internals I can always use later for a new block if I ever wear the new one out. Our blocks as you know are 1200$ throw away as they can only be honed .020 over and that's if the cast in sleeves are straight.... I thought about going cast iron and could have done it cheaper actually, yet quality is in various upper price range iron blocks, and they can be sleeved later and bored etc for a longer life yet weigh more but are after all stronger.
Just as with my old hot rods though marrying iron and aluminum means re-torque of the head bolts periodically as things expand differently and aluminum intakes would pit eventually also married up to iron mainly probably from the radiator fluid acidity. On my ls3 stroker I had to get a mast Windage tray, and do not know about the LSX for compatability to ls3 parts, you should talk to a machine shop that knows. Just look UP LSX stroker 427 on ebay and you will find custom engine supply Jerry in Angola Indiana, he was a nice guy just a busy machinist.

Well now he said he would take 3grand for it plus my short block, (has 36,000 miles on it) so debating I would still need heads, timing chain, cam and a tune that's all I can think? I'm still on the fence about it would be first time short block swap.
