Alternator issues

All of a sudden I had to replace my alternator. No biggie. Other than I am now on the 3rd one in a month. Bought from oreileys auto parts. Put them in and they are good to start then the stop charging and battery goes dead. Had the battery checked 3 times in and out of the car. Any ideas were to start on this problem. Thanks

GMs adaptive charging ... charges when it senses the need... I wonder if that may be part of it... built into the alternator I believe. Would want to be sure it know it needs to charge...

Yes hammdo adaptive charging. Goes to 15 v to 12 volts as needed. But then it goes to 12-11-10-9-8 and the car dies. They just take a shit. Two things that make it work. First a good battery. Checked 3 times. Gm battery 1 year old. Checks perfect each time. Second good alternator. On the 3rd one. Only thing the car has is a shitload of hp. No stereo or any other electronics. If the battery just drained I would say something else is drawing juice somewhere. But it can be charged sit for 3 weeks and start right up. I'm thinking whatever tells the adaptive charging to work has something to do with it or just 3 week alternator. Maybe I will just buy a new gm one and start fresh.

Are they new or refurbed? Refurbished alts tend to have high failure rates from my experience of having had worked for O'Reilly's.

Sure sounds Like the adaptive is not sensing correctly. New may help...don’t know if the manual has a check for it or, if the tech 2 would help...

Are you running the stock underdrive pulley or did you replace it ?

Did you ever resolve this problem?

Im having the same issue. I have the battery fully charged up with a trickle charger. its less than a year old Interstate battery. Brand new OEM alternator. starts, drives, service charging system warning. I can drive for about an hour tops. volts slowly dropping the whole time. until the car just turns everything off and then eventually the motor dies, battery dead.

Not yet. Has been sitting in storage. Have not have time to look into it yet. Starting to piss me off. Car is perfect other than this stupid issue. Never had a problem what so ever till this. Pulling alternator out again this weekend to see what's wrong with it. There has to be a short somewhere. Not sure why unless the alternator dying took something with it. I'll let ya know when I find the issue.
