Is it worth trading in my '16 2SS for a '15 Z28??
Love my SS, but there are so many of them (especially in hyper blue) that it irks me lol. Anyways I've had a pretty serious eye on a chevy certified '15 Z28 w/ extremely low miles (20k less than my current SS to be exact).
The collector in me likes the idea of the Z28 more (and all the Z28s I owned over the years). I know this is a tad slower than the 6th gens, and is missing basically *everything*, but I love the look of it, and you never see them around. I'm trying to decide, because if the dealership comes back with a good initial trade in offer @ or above the range I had in mind, then I might jump. I have owned a 5th gen before as well (2k12 45th 2SS), so I'm familiar with the basic differences between the 2 gens. I'm hoping some of you may have driven both...I've never driven the 14-15 Z28...I've read on here the street ride isn't as bad as its made out to be, but where I'm in in Florida, there tend to be a good number of those damn speed humps on the roads, so I'm curious how well the car handles those, given the low front clearance (and people saying they have to angle into their driveway). No intentions on tracking it really either... Last edited by HoodCheck; 02-03-2019 at 09:34 PM. |

I was a PT Engineer for GM for 3 years. If its made by GM and is gasoline powered, I've driven it. I love both cars for various reasons. a 1ss or 2ss is an ideal DD for me, nice and tame, comfortable, ive test driven them on LONG trips with no issues. The track toy/DD line can easily be blurred in a 6th gen. In a perfect world I would have a 6th gen (4/6/8 doesnt matter) parked next to my Z for daily duty/travel purposes.
All that being said, I daily drive my Z and dont have any complaints. BUT, I was always adamant about this (and the ZL11LE)is how these cars should be anyway. I dont care for all the gizmos and cameras and iphone charging etc etc. Take out all the crap I dont need, add in all the good bits a performance car should have. As long as you dont get in it and expect it to be AS comfortable as your 6th gen SS..you'll be fine. The only sacrifice IMO you're giving up (besides the obviously better chassis) is the air-con. I love the 6th gen air con vents. I can fit my hands in them to warm up. Edit: about the bumps and stuff, its not as low as it seems. I had a much more difficult time in the new ZR1..that car scraped everything. Work on your approach angle and you'll be fine. I drove mine in MI with what is widely considered to be one of the worst infrastructure in the country..I just planned my route/drive with raised awareness accordingly. There is of course, a couple of places my car just simply wont make it around where I live now...not the end of the world. |

Ive driven a 6th gen SS 1LE for a few days, definitely feels way " Friendly " to you in all ways. Going through bumps, regular driving, and of course all the fancy stuff on the inside, screens, heated seats ... etc. But in my option, I liked the rareness of the 5th gen Z/28 as well as the meanness to you.

Really depends on what you're looking for. The rarity is nice, but it won't matter for long if you aren't prepared to live without all the tech, much more compliant suspension, etc.
I have 35.5K miles on mine and daily drive it and it's not as brutal as some have made it out to be, but it's very stiff and that's something you must be prepared to live with. Taking Trofeos off will help, but when you hit a big dip on the hwy at 70 MPH the tires don't matter much....you'll feel it. Also, you'll get lots of positive attention, but you'll get a fair amount of moronic attention too. Gotta take the bad with the good. All that said.. it's a blast and I look forward to turning the key every time.

If you're not tracking the car and you are simply looking for something more exclusive, don't even bother. The Z/28 has 20k miles less than your '16 SS? I'm assuming you DD your '16? Stick with the SS, bud.

IMO, get the Z/28 if you want it. It'll hold it's value better than the 6th gen. Even if you're putting the miles on it or not. Which is why I got a used Z/28 over a new 6th gen SS 1LE.
Current used 5th/6th gen SS (1LE's included too) are a good forecast of this, depreciating. There's so many of them. Z/28's are pretty stagnant, as of recent, though.

Z/28 is pretty cool... 427, DSSVs, carbon ceramic brakes, super low, rare, exhaust sound is excellent, tons of torque on the street, gen 5 bigger interior and trunk space. Corners on rails, and you can bring it to the car show and show it off. I would get the Z/28, but, I am biased and own a Z/28.

The Z is just a great looking car. I saw a white one go on sale recently in my neck of the woods at a great price. I think it was on sale for about a week and I believe it was sold.
All in all, the 5th Gen is just a more barebones vehicle it seems. Depends on what you like. I have my eyes set on a 6th Gen in a few years (used ZL1 perhaps). |

Two things:
- Once you own one you’ll see them everywhere. Well, maybe not everywhere. - This >I've never driven the 14-15 Z28< Go drive it. Either you’ll be hooked or you won’t be. But, driving the car will help make your mind up real quick. |

For DD 6th Gen SS will be easier to live with. I had a 6th gen SS vert rental for a few weeks when my DD was getting repaired from being rear ended. I was very impressed with the adj. suspension, handling and it is plenty quick for the street.
Z/28 is more raw, ride firmer (but not harsh) has the front splitter so there are some parking drives that need to be angled and you have to watch out for curb stops etc. But that is all part of owning this particular car. These small inconveniences are more than offset by the feel, performance and fun this car provides you. So for a daily I would not make the trade. If it is your weekend car I would go drive the one available and if it speaks to you I would make the switch. Collectible is nice to think about, but won't matter for 10+ years from now - in may case I plan to have plenty of fun drives on mine and some miles by then! Good luck with your decision! |

thanks for the responses
It would indeed be my daily driver, however my daily drives consist of store runs no more than 7 miles up the street *sometimes*, but mostly a couple mile drives to the nearest grocery store. On average I would say I drive maybe 5000-6000 miles a year, if I were just driving a single car (I have a '16 Suburban as well). I don't do much of any highway driving or anything like that since I work from home. And yea, I definitely need to drive it. Unfortunately unless I find someone nearby with 1 who will let me take a quick spin in it in exchange for a spin in mine, the closest one is a couple hours away. The one I *was* trying to work on got sold before I got a deposit in, and that one was a much closer 35 miles away :| |
