Flat plane crank in next gen hi po Mustang?

If you've ever been over to the mustang6g forums, you can read about a possible next gen Mustang with a flat plane crank. Rumors are 5.2 to 5.4 liters, 8,5000 rpm redline and at least 500 hp naturally aspirated. I'm not a Mustang guy but that would certainly be impressive. With GM abandoning natural aspiration for anything other than base V8s, it would be interesting to see how they plan on dealing with it.

Could work. I love the sound of a FPC. The GenII Coyote could pull off 5.2 pretty easy. 0.1L can be gained simply by switching out the iron sleeves for PTWA liners. A lot of R&D would go into a mill like this, which some may see as crazy for a niche car like GT350, but Roadrunner for the Boss302 was In the same boat.

I could see Ford doing it based on them building the Road Runner and the Trinity. I'm more interested in what GM would do to counter it.

I think GM would do as they always have...stick to their guns. Keeping a healthy displacement advantage works well for them. Comparing a NA FPC, which will be high strung, to GM's LTx series of engines will be interesting. "Voodoo", as it's been referred to, will make a ton of HP for its displacement, but like Roadrunner, it will lack comparative TQ vs the LSx series. In the end each company will do what they do... and we'll buy what feels right. And poke fun at the "other guys" along the way. These are interesting times indeed.

I know GM will maintain a displacement advantage but it looks like the LT1 will be the only naturally aspirated performance V8 GM is going to build. If they don't develop something to counter the "Voodoo", then they will be at a disadvantage.

According to Car and Driver the flat plane crank engine that Ford is working on is nowhere close to being finished. It sounds interesting but we won't see it for awhile if at all.

That may be true but some of the test car videos I have seen sound a lot like a flat plane crank.

It's not for everyone. Most "muscle" fans prefer the rumble of a CPC V8. I guess I feels more "American" to them. I admit I do enjoy the way my 4.6 sounds, but that by no means means that I should dismiss the more "European" sounding FPC.

Most people look to the 458's mill (or similar engine) for a "sample" of what it may sound like. But what they may not think about is that they as mid-engined cars have a much shorter exhaust tract. Mustang equipped with a FPC will have a full vehicles length to "tune" the exhaust sound. As you can tell by the chopped up exhaust on the latest mule suspected of being GT350, it's still in testing.

Either way, Voodoo should be a hell of a powerplant.

I'm not a fan of the exhaust note from a flat plane crank but Voodoo is real, it shows Ford continues to try new things with its power plants where GM doesn't.

Voodoo will have considerably more displacement than the 458 4.5l too.

True. Another question is will Ford build "Voodoo" to run up to 9000rpm like the 458's 4.5L? Roadrunner, has already shown itself to be stable over 8000rpm. At red line, the 458 mill makes its 562hp and down at 6000 it makes its 398 ft lbs of tq.

Roadrunner made its 444hp@7400 and 380tq@4500. Bumping displacement a few tenths, switching to FPC, and perhaps DFI and not to forget, revving another grand and a half could/should yeild 600+hp and tick up the tq output to 410+ft lbs.

sounds like an expensive engine

Considering the 5.8 that has roots in the 5.4's of 15 years ago runs upwards of 25K...

I wouldn't want to take a guess as to the price of a crate Voodoo based engine.
