Widen stock wheels

I'm considering widening my stock 2010 ss wheels. I see people having the 20x8 fronts widened, what's the reason for that? Can I widen the 20x9 to 10.5 and run a 315 tire? Will I need a spacer? Thanks

Olblue- Heard of anyone widening the ZL1/1le wheels? I would love to have the Z28 size tire but keep it at 20". I don't like the look of the 19" Z28 wheels. I know this combo would be heavy as f$ck. I would love the wide tire with the stock look.

I’m doing this modification to my wheels now. Hope to have them on the car in the next few days.
I had all 4 wheels widened. The fronts widened from 8” to 9” to mount 275s and the rears from 9” to 10.5” to mount 315s. I’m also using 15mm bolt on hub-centric wheel adapters front and rear.
As far as the reason for widening the fronts? I just thought it would look the best to increase the tire size on both the front and rear proportionally. There is also an excellent explanation of the slight difference between the fronts and rears in the “WIDENING THE STOCK WHEELS “ thread started by kmcd, it’s the first thread that Olblue75 linked above. Check post #11 and follow along for the explanation. That thread has lots of information on this modification. It was where I started.
