Not sure I agree with this.

The knowledge and muscle memory involved with shooting never fades. Of course one could be rusty and may not have excellent groupings after a long break.

I went 10+ years since shooting an ar-15 (army). I was skipping soda cans across the range at 50 yds with someone else's gun first day back. Not a huge feat but, it felt like being reunited with a long lost friend.

Pistols and rifles are two different stories. I do agree shooting a rifle is far less perishable. As a generality, rifles are less dependent on the influence of trigger pull than a pistol. I believe this is because of the sight radius and how a rifle is supported at three points - shoulder, shooting hand and support hand, and often a sling. For a handgun at close ranges (this is dependent on the level of skill the shooter has) you focus on front sight and target (put the front sight inside the silhouette of the target and fire). At distance (let's call this precision shooting and again dependent on the shooter), sight alignment and trigger pull are what you focus on as a less than smooth trigger pull (or press if you want to envision it that way) can easily affect shot placement.

It does come back quickly if, at some point, you established a good base level of skill.

I bought my Glock 23 (for home defense).....fell in LOVE with the Glock 43 when it first came out. Was hard(really hard) to find....but it has become my carry gun. I've had more than 1 guy come up to me at the range asking where I found it....it seems a lot of the gun shops here in Nevada have overinflated the price of the 43s seeing how many people want them.

of the two sig's i'd go with the 9mm. Don't know how much experience you have shooting .380 ACP, but for me, I went from .380 to 9mm and it is a much easier pistol to fire. Now the sig, it may be ok in .380, but the round for self defense...

Go with a 9mm single stack for concealed. Springfield Armory XDS 9 or 45 you'll be happy.

Yes, .380 are "utlra" concealable, but IMO I'd rather have a 9mm or 45 with me and a single stack 9MM is nice and comfortable to carry.

but, as other state it is an individual choice - go to store and at least hold them. If it doesn't work out, i'm sure some dude that can't pass a background check will gladly buy it off you in a private sale.

I'm fairly new to gun ownership, but over the last two years I built up three nice pairings of guns. It's really just a hobby right now and I don't shoot them a lot, but my son and I are having fun prepping for the Zombie apocalypse. I like doing the research on the types of guns and purchasing and installing the "furniture" and internals to make a good gun better.

Combat:
Windham Weaponry AR-15
Taurus 1911 9mm

Hunting:
Remington 870 12g
Taurus Ranging Bull .44

Zombies:
Standard Manufacturing DP-12 12g (no mods yet)
Sig Sauer SP2022 9mm

What is C5's opinion on the P938 for edc? I've been kicking around getting one, shot a P238 and an XDS, really liked the feel of the P238. Also considered getting a "carry" version of a 1911

I like the P238, just not the price tag.

If I was to get a box gun compact 1911 for carry it would probably be this

http://stiguns.com/guns/guardian/

And if you are in the market for something really amazing

http://www.edbrown.com/kobracarry.htm

.

How concealable and comfortable is carrying a shorter barreled 1911? I'm not quite into Ed Brown league, I leave purchases that large to rifles

Hey guys. I'm looking for some input. I've decided that I'm going to buy a first firearm, and that it's going to be a C&R rifle. I want to get something that is inexpensive, but will appreciate in value over time. I also want to get something that is fun to shoot. I want to stay under $500, preferably under $350 or so. The firearms I'm considering are:
Lee Enfield (probably No.4 MkI)
Swiss K31
Finnish Mosin Nagant
M1 Carbine (but I think they are a couple hundred dollars more expensive than the others).
Of course, a Mauser should go on this list, but from what little I've read, the K98K is the one to get and they are much more expensive than the rest of this list.
I'd love to get an M1 Garand, but they are expensive.

Each has its own benefits, and each has its own drawbacks.

From what little I've read, here's the conclusions I've come to:
Swiss K31 - (+) Accurate, high quality, generally good condition, high quality ammo, becoming more popular (good for future value). (-) Hard to find ammo (expensive) and ejects shells onto your head.
Finnish Mosen Nagant - (+) Accurate, cheap ammo. (-) Corrosive ammo, heavier and more recoil than others, not everybody likes them (may hurt value down the road).
Lee Enfield - (+) Very nice gun, popular (good for value). (-) Generally not quite as accurate as the other two (I think I listed them in order of accuracy), Hard to find ammo (though not as hard as the K31).

I'd like to hear your opinions.

Day to day in work attire e.g. tucked in shirt, I carry a Kahr CM9 in the front pocket. In casual attire, e.g. shirt not tucked in, I switch between a Sti Shadow (1911 commander size) in 9mm, a Kimber Raptor II (1911 commander size) in 45, and a Sig p320 (striker fired compact frame) in 9mm. With the right belt and holster all three are fairly easy to conceal. I really like 1911s because they tend to be much thinner than the standard striker fired pistol, and in my opinion a little easier to conceal. The draw back to carrying a 1911 is the additional muscle memory needed (e.g. training) to sweep the safety in less than ideal conditions.

The more I think about it the more I consider a commander sized 1911... How's recoil on a commander sized .45? I've been kicking around going 9mm, and also found an okay deal on a p938, but I kind of like the bigger sized. I want to get something soon to practice with extensively this summer.

Thanks.

Springfield (SIG also)still makes a fine 1911... let loose of a couple hundred extra and get a keeper, over a lesser pistol, that will be hit/miss on QC.

.45 is a sweet round, not a lot of muzzle jump even from a short barrel. I've shot 4"bbl composite guns in 9mm and .40 that jumped more. Steel frame adds weight but makes for a well behaved short barrel pistol.

Have you been shooting that .338? I was expecting pics..... a year ago
