Hot Start Issues
I am seeing some hot start issues on my '14 Z/28. When I come off the track or anytime the car is warm and shut it down and then try to restart it within a few minutes, it cranks quite slowly. It typically starts but it doesn't crank very well. I have already replaced the battery, is the starter next? Anyone else seen this?

I've read here slow cranking is the nature of the LS7. Mine cranks slow from time to time. Was concerning at first but it fires up each and every time.

There is not a lot of room between the starter solenoid and the exhaust, and that gets a lot worst if you add headers, ask me how i know, so whats going on is the solenoid is getting hot and the starter is not working at its best.

Happens all the time, regardless of temp. Obviously heat makes it worse, but it's the nature of the high compression imo. Probably also due to having a smaller than normal battery for weight savings.

Mine does the same, especially on track days when everything gets wicked hot. Though disconcerting, it's never failed to start.

He's here pretty often. He had the same issue, got progressively worse. Dealer found a weak starter, replaced it under warranty. Done. |

Good thread. I too have occasional “lazy” starts when hot but it fires.

I have an after market warranty on the car, maybe I will see if I can get them to give me a new starter...

My car has been heavily modded and that exacerbated the sluggish turnover. There were times when it almost wouldn’t start (only when hot). Replaced starter (under warranty). Still a bit sluggish, but huge difference.

Sounds like it could be due to starter heat soak. See these threads about guys having the same problem that fixed it (after having replacing the battery & starter) by adding either a 2nd engine block ground cable or a positive bypass cable.

As folks read the rest of my reply they should bear in mind that I had significant mods done in late May of 2018, incl. AR headers. The issue began soon thereafter and got worse during the hot Texas Summer. Prior to mods I always noticed that it was slower than other cars (except for ZL1) to crank over. However, after the mods I noticed it cranking more slowly on hot starts and then during the Summer the problem got much worse (as in click, click, click, crank worse..). I had a new starter installed just as temps were starting to cool down. Seemed to help, but I could tell that it wasn't back to normal. I had the 2nd ground cable installed about a month ago and and problem fixed. In fact, today it's in the low 70s. I drove the Z fairly hard and oil temp got to 210+ and had zero problem cranking over. We'll see how it does in the Summer heat, but so far, so good.

Can you provide some details regarding where and how you installed the 2nd ground cable? I bought the cables and am ready to install them but I would love to get more info on your install.
