1969 title
I have a chance to get a 69 camaro at a good price the only thing is there is no title. I had the vin checked its not stolen and tax has not been paid since 1997. The person selling bought it in 97 but never transferred the title. I have the name and address of the last owner but cannot find him. Im in KY so a bill of sale will not work any suggestions?

Does he have the last registration? Not sure if it's the same, but in NY, on old cars the registration serves as the title. Contact your dmv, i'm sure there's a way to get it done as long as there is some sort of a paper trail.

I went to the dmv and they said I needed to contact the owner and they gave me his address but he no longer lives there.Ky is one of the states that will only take a title some will take a bill of sale but not Ky

That sucks, will take some leg work for sure, but with the power of google and facebook you can find most people. If you know any police officers, they could probably help as well. Use it as a bargaining chip to get a better deal.

Can you license it in another state then transfer it to you in your state?

In Kansas you'd only need a bill of sale, I'd call your DMV and ask about that. Even talk with your local state patrol officer, they might have some insight. Good Luck!

Dumb question. Since when is it the buyers issue to find the title? Should that be the sellers issue to provide a clear title?

Can the guy who currently owns it apply for a 'lost title'? I would think that he would be tearing his house apart to find the title if he wants to sell.

Unsure on having to be a resident.
I bought my 68 through a broker here in NZ,it was from a damaged auctioning the states,he had to register it in Alabama to export it to me in New Zealand.less strict rules on damaged cars back then I think. I spose the guy selling it just wants it sold,if it is cheap enough it would be worth the hassle. |

If the current owner is not willing to do the legwork, I would be looking to hire a title service. Takes the headache out of it.
Some states are different - NY does not issue titles for vehicles older than 1973. They use a "transferrable registration". I moved to AR and had to apply for a title for my '69 Camaro. Not painful at all. -Mark. |
