I don't remember that my A/C turns the recirc on automatically by adjusting the temperature to the coldest setting, I've always pushed the button for it to turn on.
Either way, you shouldn't turn the dial all the way to the left unless you want to break your blend door. If you turn just the key on and listen as you turn the dial one click at a time you'll notice the last 3 or 4 clicks that the blend door sounds like it is getting stressed, which is what causes it to break and either get stuck on heat or cold all the time. I keep my A/C aimed 3 or 4 clicks to the right of the maximum cold setting and it makes no difference in how cold it gets since the blend door is already completely moved by then. |

well I must be misremembering then thinking about another car for some reason. either way I'm probably gonna go to my parents house for memorial day and I'll try to remember to test out dad's maro. it's got like 20k miles and garage kept since he bought it with 5 miles, so I'd wager if anything is going to tell us definitively one way or the other, it's his.

just got back from dad's house and I can confirm definitively that moving the temp dial to max ac does in fact NOT turn on the compressor and recirc. so that settles that.
