Alternative CCM Rear Brake Rotor Solution Gen 5 Z/28

I wanted to share a solution for those struggling to find rear brake rotors for the 2015 Camaro Z/28, specifically the discontinued GM Parts 22958647.

After some research, I discovered that the C7 ZR1 rear rotors (AC Delco Part number 177-1177) are a viable alternative.

The C7 ZR1 rear rotor rings (dimensions: 390x32) can be swapped onto the OEM Z/28 hats. I have personally done this and can confirm it works perfectly. The torque spec for the bolts on the ring to hat is approximately 7 ft-lbs (100 inch-lbs).

When swapping rings, be sure to apply Loctite to the bolts, thread them all in by hand, and then torque them in a star pattern (similar to tightening wheel lug nuts) to ensure even distribution and proper seating.

Additionally, based on the dimensions (394x36), I suspect that the C6 ZR1 front rotor rings will also be swappable to the OEM gen 5 Z/28 front hats. I haven't tested this yet but am fairly certain it would work.

thanks for sharing! This is good news. Not terribly surprising since the brake caliper is also compatible (for CCM corvettes).
do you know the cost of those C7 rotors?
also, you are very clear about rear brake rotors, are you implying this won't be possible for front or just that you have not tried?

Disc "dimensions" wise:

  • C6 - Front 394x36, Rear 380x34
  • C7 - Front 390x36, Rear 390x32
  • Z28 - Front 394x36 (C6 Front), Rear 390x32 (C7 Rear)

I'm fairly confident that the C6 ZR1 rotor discs can be swapped to our hats (99% certain), but haven't personally tried it. I'm confident enough that I will probably purchase a set of C6 ZR1 front rotors to have as backup. The C6 ZR1 front discs are actually a little cheaper then the gen 5 z/28 discs (maybe because they made more C6 ZR1?), and they are easier to find.

C7 rear discs aren't cheap, but they are available. I've seen them for around $1700-1900 each. I paid $1800 a piece for mine.

Once in a while though, they do come up used on ebay for way less. I personally would be ok with trying used rotors as long as there are enough images showing few to no imperfections in the rotor surface and as long as they post the weight. As long as they appear smooth, and the weight is within range, then they should be good to go.

ALSO - there are a handful of companies that are starting to offer CCM disc refurbishment. This is generally an affordable option for exotic cars, like Lambos and Ferraris, where the discs are $4-5k a piece. Based on my conversations with these companies, they generally charge around the same price we pay per rotor for resurfacing. Crossing my fingers that the price on this comes down as the technology improves and it becomes more common.

Thanks for sharing! Strange that C6 ZR1 rotors are not discontinued yet.

I put a set of ZR1 hats on Gen6 ZL1 rings, so they might be an option as well. Based on what I saw, I agree that Z28 hats should fit ZR1 rings. This would only be for the fronts as the rear Gen6 setup is the same as the Gen5 SS/ZL1s.
