Lots of women on that list that probably don't deserve to be named after a ship according to the opinions of some on this forum

I just find it odd them naming a ship after someone that the vast majority of people have never heard of. I don't know all the names of the ships, but I'm pretty sure they are people that are easily recognizable by almost everyone. I don't care that she was named, but it does seem odd.

USS Jason Dunham was named after an OIF vet.
Gunny, the REAGAN was commissioned before Reagan passed away. I was on the ship at the time and were were in transit to San Diego from Virginia at the time. The CO (Capt. James Symonds) actually left the ship during the transit and attended the funeral and presented the Ensign that was flying over the ship when we heard he had passed away to Mrs. Reagan.

You are correct, he passed away about 11 months after...sorry! Did you think that was odd, serving on a ship of a living person? I think they named it after him because they knew he was about to kick the bucket.

I know that is was one of those things that was and is different about the REAGAN and now the BUSH. I am actually back on the REAGAN and it still is a "special" ship we always seem to want to do things the REAGAN way instead of following the other CVNs before us.

Makes sense?

Oh and Submarines are named after U.S. states

I think naming this ship after this senator was strictly political. I'm not sure on her history, but maybe she was very much involved with the military... VA Affairs, etc... Who knows? I seriously doubt it was strictly political though... The Navy has a lot of tradition and I doubt they would just let a ship be named after a senator, regardless if she got shot or not.
Not entirely correct. Boomers are named after states, fast attacks after cities and real subs ( diesel) were named after sea criters.

Oddly enough with the next class of SSNs currently being built, they are naming fast attacks after states.... VIRGINIA, TEXAS, HAWAII, NORTH CAROLINA... weird. basically it comes down to there being no real convention anymore, just what politician has the most pull at the time and who we have to appease to get another ship built.

If you really want to wonder what the SECNAV was doing back in the day look at the SEAWOLF class... SEAWOLF (SSN-21), CONNECTICUT (SSN-22) and JIMMY CARTER (SSN-23)....no consistency what so ever...

UNited States Naval Ship Naming Conventions

Has anyone seen the ship named after her? It's basically a PT boat.
Doesn't make it right though.
