Test Detail

So I've been practicing and improving my wash & detail techniques. I'm waiting on some Pete's 53 & Black Light glaze so I figured I would test out some steps on my DD - a 2007 Lincoln MKX - before hitting the Camaro in a few weeks.

So the steps I took today were engine clean with CG's Citrus APC & Natural Shine - then the exterior with CG's Citrus Wash using the foam gun, Iron-X, Clay, another Citrus Wash, Mequiars 205 (didn't need 105) using PC, 2 coats CG's Jet 109, tires/trim with CG's Black on Black, and finish with Adam's Glass Cleaner (absolutely the best glass cleaner on the planet). Planned on waxing with Meguiars NXT but IIRC I should let the sealer cure for a day??

Excuse the pictures as they were taken right as the sun was going done. And of course since I started the chances of rain have gone up for tomorrow as my DD stays outside.

Can't wait to do this again on the Camaro in a few weeks. Over all I'm happy with my techinque progress that I've made since joining this forum. Thanks to all the active members that provide great advice!

Great job and agreed, I love the Adams glass cleaner, so effort less, streak less.

Thanks - and the sun is out this morning so mabe I lucked out on the rain for a while. Work around the house will keep me from working on the Camaro for a few weeks. Might get the subwoofer installed today if I'm really lucky.

What pad did you use the 205 with?

Looks great and probably wouldn't hurt to wait 12 hours in between the coats.

For this round I used a Lake Country 5.5" white polishing pad. Light cutting pad because overall the paint on the MKX is in excellent condition. I used 105 with the orange pad a month or so ago to spot detail where there were some light scratches. Have to say I am happy with how the paint has stood up for a 6 year old car with 51k miles.

Nice job.

So have you been using Iron X for a while and do you see a noticeable difference when using it?

First time I've used it - on this car I had some areas turn purple, but not much. Mainly on the wheels. The smell is bad but it wasn't horrible. The thing I noticed is it takes a lot of the bottle for one car so I think I can only get 2-3 vehicles with a single bottle. Over all I didn't see that much improvement using it but I will try again with the Camaro.

It's not something you're going to see a difference by doing. It's just a good idea to do. Certainly what I'd consider an optional step.

That's kind of what I see of it. Not a bad thing to do but not on the same level as claying and such. Time to slow down buying up this detailing stuff though
