Shop Size
I am starting to draw up plans for my new shop I will build next year. Curious what size you are all running. I plan to have a 2 post lift, room for tool chest, work bench, compressor, etc. and a spot to park a second project car. My current 24 x 24 garage is a bit small for what I want so I know I need to go bigger but I don't want to go crazy big since it will cost more to build. Is 32x32 a good size? Bigger? Smaller? Suggestion to incorporate into this build? This is my first auto shop. I have built a couple wood working shops so I know if you do it right you can maximize space and not have to have a huge building.

I recommend building a shop that is too big, too tall, too bright, too clean, too comfortable, too accessible and too organized.

I built a insulated 40x50 10 years ago with 16' ceiling and thought it would plenty big. Now I'm thinking about adding 3000 sq ft off the back and side of it. I would suggest, building it as big as you can afford with the option to add on.

Damn. What do you guys all do in your shops to fill a 40 x 50/60? Do you use it for more than a dedicated car shop? My father-in-law has a 40 x 50 with a 2 post lift, overhead crane bay, full bathroom and man cave. Last time I was there I put my Jeep up on the lift and he had a 57 Chevy on the rotisserie in the crane bay. He also had his 2 zero turn mowers in there and there was definitely no lack of space. I get the go big as you can but I also don't want a bunch of space that is never used.
Let me ask this - How much room do you need for a 2 post lift to have plenty of room around the car to work on things? |

20x40 of mine is divided of in to a office/mancave/storage area with a full bath and CH/CA. That leaves 40x40 for the shop part. Almost always have 6 of my cars, 2 riding mowers, generator, compressor, tools, couple work benches, and my motorcycle on that side. That keeps it fuller than I want but to many toys to leave outside. In fact I really want a lift but don't want to give up the room to park an extra car. Plus my buddy down the street has 3 lifts and can usually use one whenever needed. Shops just seem to fill up fast if you have the empty space. Personally I like that it's 40' deep as I have some room with cars parked two deep to still move around. Just wish it was bigger.

+1 Just build it as big as you can afford.
Mine is 28x36 with an 18x10 loft and the vert and SxS still have to be parked next door with mom. I also have a shed the lawn tractor is parked in. When I do a build, I use the back half of the shop (18x28). That is where the lift would go if I get one. There are two 8'x3' work benches and I stack parts on them in the order they come off the car as well as labeling stuff. 18x28 probably gives more space than needed, but if you ever work on a crew cab truck, probably not. You need heavy duty shelving to make the most of the space. I got some commercial stuff off CL that worked very well. Tires go on the floor under the shelves and one side is an 18' workbench with old military parts bins that must weigh well over 1000 pounds now that they are full of stuff I can't bear to throw away.

My 32X52 is filled up. 2 post lift, 4 post lift, tire machine, balancer, welding equipment (mig & tig), tool boxes work benches shelves, 1970 Camaro, 2104 Camaro, 2015, Camaro, 1996 Silverado 3500. And associated extra parts for said vehicles.

My current shop is 24x60. I wish it was wider but it’s a commercial complex so it is what it is. 32’ would have been great.
For the depth I would suggest a minimum of 40’ which allows two cars end to end if needed. I can get three end to end in mine in a pinch. I also have a 24x20 mezzanine which is great for storage, poker games, etc. I’m getting to the point where I’m even considering moving some equipment up to the mezzanine. My blast cabinet, metal brake, bead roller, shrinker/stretcher could all go up there because any materials would easily fit up the stairs. The shop floor is getting FULL.

For a two car shop 32x32 sounds great and what I wanted but due to building code here I was limited to 24x30. With a single garage on the house I manage to make it work tho.
