GM USES CRAPPY LIFTERS

So my check engine light comes on sat. night and today its still on so i get a diagnostic check from On Star and it comes back with some sort of emissions failure...then without hesistation i take it to my tuner at Tune Time Performance where they had a tech scan my car... it came back with 2 codes...one was for a misfire which it def was doing..So after trying to let the car sit and get cool so he could hear it from a cold start i was there all day.. LOng story short they found metal shards in my oil and with the symptoms the car had with all the misfires especially at cylinder #5 and #7 (not at idle but as soon as u got to 1500 rpm it was constant) the tuner figured it was the lifters GM uses..they ware quickly(springs)

Oh by the way i only have 8000 miles on it lol. Luckily he had a friend at pine belt chevy in eatontown that will do the work covered under warranty..my car has alot of mods and dealers are sometimes sketchy when it comes to covering the work when you have aftermarket work done to your..The shop foreman said as long as i didnt have a supercharger, cam or heads done he said he will do all the work...good to know people...

so what i thought would be a short day and thought it would just be something they could fix on the scan with computer turned out to be a nightmare...

just a heads up to all you guys,,, im sure i wont be the only one ..
what sucks is they will just replace the lifters with the same old lifters and it will prob happen again..i guess there built to fail..????

makes me just wanna do the cam and lifters now hahaha...

There's a known TSB (service bulletin) out for this issue. I'll see if I can find it and add it to my reply here. This would've been covered anyway, no worries

EDIT: Is this what you're experiencing? http://www.camaro5.com/forums/showth...82#post2713182

Equipped with AFM (Active Fuel Management) and V8 Engine RPO L76, L94, L99, LC9, LFA, LH6, LMG, LS4, LY5 or LZ1

Attention: This bulletin only applies to the AFM V8 engines listed above. It DOES NOT apply to Non-AFM Engines. If you are dealing with a Non-AFM engine that is experiencing a similar noise, please refer to Engine Mechanical > Diagnostic Information and Procedures > Symptoms in SI.

This bulletin is being revised to add the 2011 model year. Please discard Corporate Bulletin Number 10-06-01-007A (Section 06 - Engine/Propulsion System).

Condition

Some customers may comment on an engine valve lifter tick noise that occurs after the engine has been shut off for at least two hours. The tick noise may last from two seconds to ten minutes.

Cause

This condition may be caused by any of the following:

• Aerated oil in the valve lifter body, resulting in the valve lifter being unable to purge the air quickly.

• A low engine oil level or incorrect oil viscosity.

• Dirty or contaminated oil.

• A low internal valve lifter oil reservoir level.

• Debris in the valve lifter.

• A high valve lifter leak down rate.

Correction

If the SI diagnostics do not isolate the cause of this valve lifter tick noise and normal oil pressure is noted during the concern, perform the following steps:
  1. Inspect the engine oil condition and level. Refer to Owner Manual > Service and Appearance Care > Checking Things Under the Hood > Description and Operation > Engine Oil in SI.
⇒If the engine oil is more than one quart low, an incorrect oil viscosity is being used or if poor quality/contamination is observed, change the oil and filter.

  1. Note: Allow at least a two hour soak time between engine OFF and start up when evaluating the tick noise.
  2. Start the engine and evaluate the valve lifter tick noise.
⇒If the valve lifter tick noise is still present, replace all 16 valve lifters. Refer to Valve Lifter Replacement in SI.
Note: A V8 AFM engine requires 8 AFM lifters and 8 non-AFM lifters for a total of 16 lifters.

GM bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, NOT a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform these technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions, and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, DO NOT assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See your GM dealer for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.

I'm glad I'm having my lifters replaced while my cam is going in.

Sorry to hear about your problems, but I'm glad to hear it's being fixed under warranty.

I need to take my car in for that same issue at some point--or at least have it inspected. Let us know how it goes.

Another great example of how the "Tuned car = voided warranty" is more GM fueled paranoia than reality.

Glad this worked out for you.

CTSV racing lifters are cheap @ $350 for the set. Designed for sustained high rpm use.

My L99 collapsed a few lifters at 400 miles. They pumped back up and where fine but we pulled them at 600 miles while getting rid of the DOD/AFM and installed LS7 lifters. I've seen alot of the CTS-V lifters fail throughout the years. The LS7 lifters are $120 or so and we use them in all the builds without issue's.
