Pop-up Navigation

I probably shouldn't post pics until finished but I have been planning this mod for a while and finally have time to work on it. I have removed my center speaker and converted the speaker grill into a pop up navigation pod for my portable gps.

Here are some pics of the progress:

It will be controlled from a switch that will be where the HUD controls are for the newer Camaros. Best of all, this mod (minus the cost of the gps) was under $40

Since I disconnected that useless speaker, I've been waiting for someone to do this!

Looks cool. I'll be interested to see what it looks like when stowed away.

Blacky made a mod similar to this. He posted a video somewhere - possibly his build thread

OK, this is a really great idea. I definately would like the option of a dedicated spot to park my stand-alone Garmin unit. For those of us with the ******** 5.1 channel total system enhancement package, the center speaker is deactivated anyway. This is a perfect spot for the Garmin. Power cable with the traffic thingy can be hidden ... fantastic. I don't even need the thing to be motorized (although this is a nice touch)

Hmmm, I would be very concerned about the visability issue here. Camaros dont offer a lot of windshield space to begin with. I currently mount mine under/behind the mirror and it is one of the small units. That eats up a lot of windshield space. I know that whe I drive with HUD it is directly in line of sight. It is see thru so I cannot imagine a fixed object there.

In addition, you need to consider that some states are considering windshield obstructions as an illegal item. While you are making it button controlled, this could be a problem for you down the road.

I would encourage you to consider a space somewhere to the right of the main ****pit. Directly in front of the driver is bound to cause you problems.

I think there may be room for a Gamin in the center without causing a visual obstruction. You just need to keep the unit low on the dash.

From the pics it looks like you have the GPS screen facing up towards the window when it is folded down. If this is the case, are you worried about the effects of the direct sun / heat on the screen when not in use? I had a phone that I left on the dash of my truck all day in the Texas heat, and when I came back to it, the LCD was not happy. May not be an issue with current gen LCDs. (This happened to me a long time ago)

EDIT: Nvmd, ignore all that. I see now that you have the screen set to face down when not in use. Good job
