My motive was shock that a police officer makes that much, that's all. This guy was the second highest paid City employee.

Having worked with Police Officers for 13 years, none of them even made close to that (only the Chief even made just over 100K), even with 20+ years of service.

I'm not sure the motive of including this fact in the original story, other than the author must have been shocked as well - and yes, I think perhaps it would be pertinent to the citizens of Baltimore that an out of control peace officer (allegedly) is the second highest paid city employee - it does beg the question of how this is possible (I suppose overtime plays a huge role).

Damn that's a lot of loot. Many of us have a hard time approaching 100k, let alone two fiddyk. I get it though; Its the overtime which can double or triple one's salary. I say if you've got it, flaunt it. None of us (or no one that I know) would say no to that salary (edit: legally that is)!

The city of Baltimore is an abhorrent and violent mess (I'll leave it at that) and they have trouble finding enough officers to fill all shifts. Yes, he volunteered for A LOT of overtime.

In Cincinnati at least, officers can also work off-duty details which counts in their overall pay but does not earn benefits (pension, leave, etc.). It can sometimes be a net benefit to the city as private businesses are paying much of the cost and the net result is a greater police presence in the community at little cost to the city.

That said, some of these guys and gals are working a lot of overtime and a lot of extra details. One guy in Cincinnati who made close to $300k one year was working 100+ hours a week based on a story in the local paper calling this practice out. Police need to sleep and have some downtime as well. Lack of either can lead to poor decisions or accidents on duty.

Baltimore is broke, it's city council is corrupt and it has an extremely high crime rate.
Now I don't begrudge OT, but the real question is what type of work if any did that officer provide for that amount of pay? That is what needs to be investigated.

I realize it's difficult for some folks to wrap their heads around the concept, but Due Process is still in place here in the US. The piece came from MSNBC, so it is naturally going to be a slanted story.

We were the lowest paid state agency in the country a few years back and even before the recent salary raises we had zone troopers hitting close to or over six figures with OT.

Just a tidbit....

It said he was the 2nd highest paid city employee but didn't state where that said money came from.

We I ran a jewelry store we paid city PO's $100 an hour and I am sure there are many other jobs that they can be contracted to do that pay well.

Carry on....
