Using a 5th Gen Camaro SS as a every day car.
In a few months I will be looking to pick up a used 5th as a daily driver. I wanted a 5th gen since I graduated high school in 2009, my heart is set on a SS model. I currently drive a 1991 Camaro Z28 (3rd gen) daily and its getting kinda boring, needs to be fixed up, and I need something newer, more reliable that is in one piece. So for all the SS owners that use theirs on a daily basis I wanted some input on a few things:
How reliable has the SS been for you when using it everyday? How much do you like using it everyday? Is is enjoyable or would you rather use something else for a daily car given the chance? Anything I should know and be aware of when using a 5th gen Camaro on a daily basis. I'm use to crappy mpg already from my Z28 but I feel its worth it owning one of these cars. Thanks for help guys and gals looking forward to being a 5th gen SS owner very soon!!! |

Mine is my daily driver. 15k miles since last May. I commute about 50 miles a day round trip, plus lots of other trips and errands. No issues as of yet. Love driving it.

My 2013 Camaro SS is my daily driver. I drive 30 miles there and back to work and other errands during the week and weekend with the kids. Got 30k miles since buying it in September of 2013. No issues at all. I love driving this car.

Mine was a daily driver till yesterday morning. I loved driving everywhere. Never a problem that didn't have an external cause

Awesome! I drive 5 miles round trip to work everyday. So thats 30 a week that shouldn't be and issue. Right now I use 1/4 tank a week for work in my 91 Z28 (a whooping 6.5 miles mpg overall). How do you guys do on gas, say just normal driving, NOT Steve McQueen driving.

I use mine daily except in winter.. if that counts. lol Enjoyable? Yes. Realiabilty shouldn't be a problem. Just do your homework and get the history of the car if you're getting a used one. I get about 19 mpg with the automatic. I could probably get more if I tried but mpg is the last thing on my mind while driving it honestly.
If you have the means to buy one, go for it. You won't regret it.

My 2010 SS is a daily driver and I just hit 69K miles. No issues other than normal wear items such as tires and brakes. A coworker also has a 2010 SS and he is at 110K miles with no issues. Since you'll be buying used, have the car inspected by someone who knows Camaro's and spend the little bit of extra cash to have ALL the fluids replaced. Also, since you're in PA, invest in a separate wheel and tire set for winter.

I just went from a 2011 LS to a 2013 SS in Feb. After a month of driving in all sorts of weather it will definitely get you places better than a 4th Gen w/ all the electronic goodies like Stabilitrak and Trac Control (though in powdery snow I turn them off to be able to move instead of having limited speed). I avg about 20 MPG with back-road driving to work and some highway, my CAI helped increase my MPG. I would definitely say go for it and like others say if you're looking used definitely make sure it gets checked out first and definitely check tire tread.

We bought a '10 L99 (Mr Freeze) last Sept., that had been a DD. We got it cheep, due to the miles. We looked at many with 40K-60K miles, and this one was just as tight, @ thousands of $ less. It had 98K miles on it, with only factory scheduled maintenance..... NO repairs, and I mean NONE (original battery and shocks).
I had the common, oil pan leak fixed under Powertrain Warranty, and I replaced both front hubs (left one was making noise). 4K on this oil change and the oil level is still in the middle of the crosshatch. Gets 18MPG in town, 24 on the road. GREAT CAR! Now at 103K and has no rattles, bumps or squeaks. Get one, and turn some heads!
