Sony is a good starter system...

I would personally recommend Alpine for subs (I love my Type-R's) but everyone has their own opinions about subs, so to each his own.

yeah i agree. SONY? now yeah you could have gone alpine little more but last longer and sound better. or you could do one hertz 12" sub and sound better then two alpins or sonys.

I actually heard those same sony woofers and different sony amp in a miata once and was impressed for what it was.

Not necessarily. Some subs are designed as shallow box subs for smaller spaces, like behind the seats in a jeep or single cab pick-up. They're not designed to be SPL/SQL contest winners, but they still sound nice for everyday stuff.

It all boils down to what you are willing to pay, what you want it to sound like, and what type of music you enjoy listening to. If you think you're going to get a contest winning system out of a $500 investment, no one here can help you
