It's to keep bits and pieces somewhat contained in the event that it really goes to hell in a handbasket. (I was gonna say when the Sh!t hits the fan but that would confuse the matter) Flywheel comming apart, stuff from the engine going places it shouldn't go like internal pieces becoming external peices etc.

That's about as helpful as a tit on a boar hog.

So what's a scatter sheild?

From my understanding of what was said... It would go on the firewall and on the undercarriage to prevent anything from getting to the driver. Basically a nice thick piece of steel that would prevent something like the flywheel that's decided it doesn't want to hang out where it's supposed to that's broken through the bell-housing, coming through the floor, and slicing the drivers head off.

There's a video I've seen around here that had a flywheel breaking into a few pieces out of a Trans-Am and nearly hitting the driver - here

When I was in High School, we lost a friend because he was running his GTX way past red line in 3rd and the flywheel exploded. It killed him instantly but spared his passengers. A scatter shield would have saved his life.

i guess he saw the movie" FINAL DESTINATION" that would make a good scene in a movie guy driving his new 2010 camaro down the road at hunts point market in the bronx when he stops short to pick up a hooker and his fan breaks off and goes threw the fire wall and cuts his pecker off .

Scatter shields protect the driver and others from catastrophic failures from the flywheel/clutch assembly coming apart at high RPM's. When the rule came about, they also made it illegal to run the fuel lines in th interior of the car....

Here is one link, there are lots of them available out there...

I used to see one made of Kevlar and attached to the body. It seemed to be a better way to go, it was lighter and flexible and took a higher impact. It also didn't hinder working on the car. I just can't remember who made it.

If/when I get to that point, a blanket is the way I'll probably go as well...

FYI, here is another link, this one list the blankets.... I'ld call before ordering to make sure I was on the right page as to what I was ordering...
