Oil Change fail, broken bolt head
I broke the bolt on the oil drain pan while I was getting ready to drain the oil. The head is completely broken off. Any tips for getting the stud out.
Or should I just have the car towed to a dealership? Edit: Crisis averted. I was able to use a pointed screw and move the stud out. Last edited by Dynamite; 07-05-2013 at 05:28 PM. Reason: Problem Solved. |

How did you manage to break the head off the oil drain bolt while taking it out??
I think you should consider going to Jiffy Lube from now on.

If there's nothing to grab, you're going to have to drill the center of the bolt out to put in an E-Z Out and turn it out with that. Hopefully there's enough room to get a drill in there, otherwise you'll be looking at buying a right-angle drill. E-Z Out sets at Harbor Freight and elsewhere have a few sizes in them along with left-hand drill bits (run in drill set on reverse). Sometimes you get lucky and the drill bit will catch and back out the bolt.

If the oil is still in the car take it to a trustworthy shop. This is not the job for you to learn how to remove a broken bolt.

You got damn lucky. Surprised the threads on the oil pan didn't pull out before you broke the head off the drain plug.

You are very lucky to have gotten it out with no damage to the pan

While this is a noob manoeuver, the only way to learn doing stuff yourself is to break things. You'll never make this mistake from on!
Good luck!

Believe me when I say that there are many guys more new than you doing things to their camaros for the first time. Sometimes horrible things. The car inspires people to learn how to take care of it personaly. Its not like just droping the bonneville off at the shop.
Your fail will probaly actually save someone else from doing the same thing, so no reason to delete imho.
