She lived... but my opinion on air bags has changed
On July 2, my daughter, age 19, was involved in a bad car accident. But... she lived.
A few months ago, I got a good deal on a 1989 Honda Accord. I was a little conflicted over whether or not I should be putting her in a car that lacked airbags, but I justified it with many reasons why it was okay. I have now realized that justifying it was wrong. We were lucky... as I said, she lived. And, she has no injuries that are life- threatening or will be disabling for life. No brain/ spinal/ neurological/ internal injuries. However, she got beat up pretty badly, with lots of broken bones, lots of cuts, bruises, and the need for surgery. She has already undergone some facial reconstruction surgery, and had titanium plates installed to hold the way- too- many pieces of her jaw in place. She is still in a lot of pain.... but she will fully recover. Her little Honda was t-boned by a Lincoln Navigator (we still don't know the cause/ fault... waiting on highway patrol report). The driver of the Navigator was not injured.... in a collision like this, the large car wins (also, nobody other than my daughter was injured/ killed in this accident.... very fortunate that my daughter had no passengers(note in the pictures the passenger seat of her Honda very tightly wedged underneath/ behind her driver's seat)). The Navigator was equipped with airbags and safety features that my daughter's Honda did not have. True, frontal airbags would not have made a difference in my daughter's case, but side impact airbags might have. However, my point is: Your loved ones need to be in the safest cars possible, not ones that are just okay, or lack modern safety features because older cars are more affordable. THAT is not a valid reason to put somebody in an older car. I have four other kids who are at, or close to, driving age. It is not a viable option to seal them up in padded rooms for the rest of their lives, in order to keep them safe. They WILL drive, and be independent, and will live as normal. And, even in the safest cars available, any could be killed or injured anyhow. But maximizing their safety has taken on a new meaning to me. They will not be put into cars that do not have airbags... and the more airbags, the better. Last edited by Scalded Dog; 07-14-2015 at 08:45 AM. |

I'm glad your daughter has survived this the way she has!
I'm a believer of airbags, after the accident my wife had in her Tahoe. Things would be very different today it they weren't in her truck.

Miracles do happen. I'd say it's a miracle that she survived that hit. Glad she is going to be ok.

Scary pictures. Glad to hear your daughter is alive, and I wish her a speedy and full recovery.
Definitely gonna remember this when it comes time to buy a car for my daughter in a few years... Best wishes.

Very scary for sure. Glad she made it through that. In 05 I was in a accident and had my jaws wired for almost 3 months. Not fun but she will get through it. Praying for speedy recovery for her. Yall hang in there.
