I was just at a birthday party with a Service Manager from a local Chevy dealer and we were shooting the breeze about warranty issues I've reading about. He said that he has gotten engines covered under warranty with lack of oil changes in Camaro's. So I mentioned people being afraid of tunes and headers.
He said that when a engine goes they take a flash of the computer and send it into GM. They can look at the programming to tell if it has been altered. They can also tell if it has ever been tuned. He also mentioned that warranty work pays up to $130 an hour so it's in their favor to get GM to pay for the repair. He also said he got them to cover a clutch on an ss with 15k.

its who you know, i am tuned and i know that i would have no problem getting any repair done under warranty

My old GT500 had a Kenny Bell on it with a TON of tuning and they covered a clutch twice along with other things.

Up to $130 per hour? Wow! One would think that dealers would treat their customers better.

Chevy/Caddy dealers will do everything they can do to get GM to cover the problem with the warranty. So dont think they are out to screw you, they actually make more money via warranty work. Most of the work they do is from warranty work.

Take into account all the service jobs that GM says takes 2hrs that really takes more like 3. You start losing money fast.

Conversely they make a killing for jobs that bill for 8 and take 4. I know mechanics that pull off 16-20 hours of labor in an 8 hour day.

yeah, they basically have a set time it takes to do a job, and thats what they charge regardless, thus this is how they give you a price on what it is going to cost.

when I was a mechanic for chevrolet in 1980 (ha ha) warranty work paid about 1/3 of chilton rate. it was tough to make a quick buck on warranty work. it was flat rate with no gaurantee.

it's also how they stay consistent throughout the industry. there's a standard amount of time depending on the job and make/model of a vehicle. at the end of the day, that's what separates a good mechanic from a bad one. how much work you can turn in a day.

there's also times (at least for the honest shops) that a 4 hour job will take 8. sometimes you get the bear, and sometimes the bear gets you

LOL, then you must know Mark Reuss personally.

The process requires the dealer to send a copy of the PCM to GM where it is compared and the warranty approved. The dealer does not get paid unless GM authorizes the repair.

So unless you have had a tuned powertrain blow up on you since 2010 when GM instituted these new rules AND got your engine rebuilt with GM paying the bill then maybe the guy you know has less influence than you think. Unless it's Mark Reuss.

The only way this works today is if the dealer sold you the mods and they agree to warranty the powertrain.

GM took these steps because of exactly what you just described. They were paying for Corvette powertrains because "somebody knew a guy" so they took clear steps to block this.

Ford may not be taking the hard stance that GM is on warranty repairs to powertrains tuned or otherwise.
