Take a concert hall for example. You pick the best seat in the center of the auditorium with nobody around. Theres a bassist on the left, guitar on the right, singer in the middle and a drummer right behind him.

When you're listening to your music ( modern mixes are engineered to enhance this feature vs. old cd mixdowns.) Close your eyes. you should hear the singer coming from the center of the sound stage, the drums with a 120 degree spread from left to right, high hat being on the right most typically and low toms on the left. All the center does is keep the vocals from wandering speaker to speaker and help hone in on a center point.

If anybody is a SQ (sound quality) freak they would tell you that rear speakers are more useless than a center channel as the rear channels should never have sound coming from them, unless you're using it on a delay to create a wider more airy and present sound stage. Same with a rear sub? .. When at a concert do you have speakers behind you? If you do, turn around you're missing the show.. Subwoofers and low end frequency should also come from the front of the sound stage where the bassist and the kickdrum are located. Reason why I have a sub in my passenger floorboard.

This is the science behind it and why maybe removing my windshield and putting a more substantial quality center channel helped me pull off 1st at iasca world finals.
I agree with alot of your points, and i see nothing wrong with a front mounted sub but a sub is non directional and can work quite well in the rear .Hope to hear your car one day

You're right it is not directional but you can still hear where the sound comes from. you can even feel it.. beating at your chest or beating at your back. Judges for my competitions are extremely picky. but if they werent you could just disconnect a center channel and compete! ;-) hehe

Id love to try out my new clutch too! :-P

How can you put a sub in the passenger floor board? There isn't any room for a passenger and a sub.

I tried this for 2 weeks.I didn't cut any wires though, pried off center speaker grille with fingers, took off 2 bolts and disconnected speaker wire clip. Meh,I went back to having it connected. An extra speaker in any system is better for me.

Has anyone tried just using a crossover and limiting the center to receive a bandpass signal? Such as crossing it over at 200hz and 3khz with a 6db slope.

I could see it having value if you were watching a THX encoded movie on your in-dash DVD player, but for true 2-channel music listening, it appears to be a gimick that really needs to be removed.

It is a decent sound system, but I dont think there should be a better sysem that you can upgrade to from factory. Ive had my speakers replaced 4 times because my dealership didnt know about that recall. Since they replaced the entire sound system, I havent blown anything.
I do hear that scratchy noise you guys are talking about. That scratchy sound is probably because the sub is slightly blown or your treb might be too high.

Anyway, I just read this thread, sorry I am a bit late in posting. I will try disconnecting it this week hopefully and Ill tell you guys what I think.
Thanks for the find.

Has anyone tried to replace the speaker with a better one or is it the signal being sent from the head unit that causes the poor sound quality? I have mine disconnected and it does sound a lot cleaner at higher volumes.

^ I was wondering the same thing. Put in my HUD this weekend and decided to keep the center speaker disconnected. Huge difference. I am not going to reconnect unless I find there is a better speaker.

I just tried this.

Im not an audiophile but can hear things most people cant. Im running treble at 6 mid at zero, bass at 2

Disconnecting the speaker seemed like an improvement, at least while i was AT the speaker and unplugged it. Was going to leave it unplugged. But then i sat back and actually listened to the music from a driving position, which is seat all the way back since im 6' and it actually sounds better with it plugged in, i noticed some sounds that were missing when i unplugged it again.

At first i didnt believe it, but then tried another 10 or so times on and off.

Ended up plugging it back in, sounds the best. I do not seem to have this overbearing sound from the center as you guys mention (unless your up in the dash at the speaker) i dont think its any louder than the door speakers.
