Appraoching 30k

At what point should I change my fluids? Daily driver and I don't beat on the car. My dealer gave me a flier with a 30k service for $600, which I have no intentions on doing since majority of the stuff in the service has been done.

Also, I have a price list of what it costs to replace these fluids as well as some other services:

Fuel Induction w/Filter: $250 w/o $170
Brake Fluid: $110
Power Steering: $120
Coolant Flush: $140
Tranny Flush (Automatic): $198
Differential Flush: $170
Total: $988 w/o tax

Thank you

wow...I have almost 60,000 on mine and did NONE of this stuff. My service manager told me to get the tranny fluid changed around 100K and I'll be good to go...

Go by what's outlined in the owner's manual.

I had a dealer try to sell me a big service on my Jeep when I brought it in for unrelated warranty work. He told me the differential fluid, front and rear, was overdue, at just 16,000 miles, and it was some ridiculous price to do it. He showed me some nice official-looking laminated card with required/recommended service intervals and explained that the fluid breaks down with the wearing of new LSD clutch packs, requiring a short first interval. I told him that would be good and true if I had LSD or locking diffs, but I don't, and the owner's book says to swap the fluid at something like 50k. The whole point of the story is to know your shit...because the dealer sometimes doesn't.

I don't necessarily think they don't know, I firmly believe they like to screw you over and take advantage of someone who doesn't know much about cars.

Well, yes I think it's one of those philosophical questions...What do you believe human nature to be? Are people generally good, or will they screw you when they can?

I like to believe it's the former, but it's often the latter...sometimes they just need some education to set them right...hehe...

Well I mean not everyone looks to screw people over. There are genuine(sp) good people out there but they tend to be overlooked because of the people that do try to take advantage of people for their money. I don't want to start a huge debate or anything but its just the world we live in :(.

What is the exact answer on transmission fluid flushes? I've heard yes/no that the transmissions are sealed and built so that the fluid never has to be changed. Or is it different for automatic/manual.

I say go by the vehicle manual's instructions. I'm approaching 50k and will need servicing fairly soon.

Who made those prices? Those are outrageous!! I am doing a cam install right now, and I paid $45 for coolant, $42 for mobil 1 auto tranny fluid, (used in manuals) $27 for brake fluid, (I have a power bleeder, thing is amazing.) Id say if you're worried about your fluids, do it yourself and save about $700.

the only thing I would recommend is the differential. After changing mine at 5K miles, and a few friends, it REALLY needed it. There are lots of little metal shavings in that housing. Drain and Replace asap.
