If you are going to piece your system together, and are going to use a dsp, your best bet is to buy raw drivers from Parts Express, Madisound, Meniscus, and/or diysoundgroup. Dayton just came out with an affordable DSP as well. Look for SB Acoustics 17 series mids and their SB29 tweets if you are looking for a 2-way system, or add some Scanspeak 10F midrange and a small format tweet if you go 3-way. Audiofrog is releasing a G-series set of components, which are supposed to be very affordable, and will most likely blow away any other offering in their price range. Their GS series is awesome as well for a mid-price set, and their GB series are arguably one of the Top 10 comp sets on the planet.

^^^^^^ this is the way to go for the money. I can't speak highly enough about the guys from Parts Express either. Owners and their admin are in a SQ group I'm in and helpful doesn't begin to describe them. That new DSP is amazing, but tuning in general does require "advanced" car audio installation skills and a level of physics and patience that can be challenging for some.

Absolutely, but if he goes this route, you can usually find someone to throw T/A, and a basic tune on it for what you’ve saved in driver cost.
