3 years ago I swapped for the 3.91 from 1le. Had gm do install and tune auto trans. Kept warranty in place. Felt much more nimble downside was harder gas mileage and knocked top end down. Figure on about 15% more rpm across the board when driving.
Have since done a few more mods now warranty gone.

These days if you’re going straight as quick as possible autos rule. Not too many years ago the were kind of a joke but much and everything has changed.

Even curvy track stuff autos and sequential shifting has become the stuff. A friends Pikes Peak car has a sequential box and it’s addictive. It’s got a clutch but you can shift it like a bike - blip and shift. No grinding no hunting blip and shift.

My ol SS does daily duty and so far twice in 3 years a track day and my old ass likes to shift. I heel/toe down shift at every stop sign and light. On the track when that all goes together so smoothly trail braking and downshifting into a corner and on exit accelerate hard and just at rev limit clutch it and let the engine exhale “WHUUU” as the next cog slips into place and the clutch transfers grunt. No snatch and grab a gear in nano seconds, a smooth 3 step little sweep of the lever will do.

It’s just the way I learned to drive fast curvy. I missed a bunch of track and racing years unfortunately and tech changes fast.

I guess thats why this gen 5 SS with an LS3 and a Tremec T6060 has been about as good of a daily driver and toy for an old motorhead as there is these days. Once I got some pedal covers so I could drive the damn thing it has provided much entertainment.

And it’s safe. Sort of. By safe I mean with a minimal mod of a CAI and some ecu tweaking it has plenty enough HP and torque for my dumb ass to get in trouble with. A ZL1 is not safe for me, I’m not smart enough to drive around with that much grunt and not do stupid things. I do pretty stupid enough things in my reasonably stock SS.

Zero to 60 is boring. I want zero to jail in under 4 seconds.

I wouldn't complain too much. My '77 Buick Century came with a 2.41:1 rear gear and a TH350 Trans. They did that to meet the fuel mileage requirement. Not quick off the line even after I dropped the engine out of my '69 GS in it.
