does this sprocket look new to you?
Bought this 3 bolt sprocket from GM parts direct and I'm a bit concerned that it is used. The packaging seemed to be original but if you look close you can see lots of nicks in the metal and seems this gear had a chain on it at some point. You can see wear marks near the teeth. I just want to make sure its not a returned part. I would hate to install someone's used part. What do you think?

Looks like hell.
Send it back, unless you need it now. That doesn't look like a new part if you ordered one. |

Yeah, I'm not super familiar with cam sprockets, yet, but my experience with motorcycle drive sprockets leads me to believe that thing's had a chain run on it before.

There are no witness marks around the bolt holes. I'd run it.

The discoloring of the metal looks like maybe its from part of the heat treating process or something along those lines. Look where the bolt holes are, these would show signs of wear if it were used, at least I would think.

Thanks for the feedback. I agree, sure seems beat to hell but no signs of bolts being tightened on it.

Can you post up the other side as well?
And maybe the teeth head on? I don't like all the nicks and scratches on the whole thing. New parts aren't supposed to look like that. I realize that sometimes they do because of how they are made and the packaging and shipping process but I've seem cam sprockets that are WAY cleaner than that. I agree with the others though. Probably fine. |

Yeah I don't like all the scratches and dings which shouldn't be a big deal as long as its not bent. I know people use old sprockets to press fit new timing sets. With all the dings in it who knows? Since I don't need it for another month I will exchange it. I like my crap to look good even if its buried inside the engine. Lol thanks guys!

If they had the nerve to send you a part that looks that bad (nicks etc...).
Then maybe you can get them to take some money off. I'd be pissed off if I ordered something new and received something that appeared to be used as a frisbee. Somebody didn't give a crap and sent it anyway. |
