The Future SuperCar Wars...2013
So, I wanted to start a quick thread now with the price being thrown at us with a lot of new things. What will the future hold in 2013.
ZL1 @ 55k & Shelby GT500 @ Unknown I imagine the 2013 ZL1 will be a few more grand than the first production run of the 2012s. However, we now have a new question...will Chevy increase the horsepower even more for 2013 with then announcement of the 2013 Shelby GT500 putting out 650HP/600Torque in a 5.8L V8 on a 3850lbs weigh-in. Let the debate begin... I will say this...I hope that perhaps by the end of this platform or the beginning of the new platform we are told for 2015 that a Z28 comes out that is lighter than the current ZL1 and SS with some of the current technology used in the ZL1...not all but most such as the magnetic ride control features, lighter body components (ie carbon fiber) and some form of supercharger or a new generation rat motor. Okay....3, 2, GO!!! |

More questions...
We now know the specs for the 2013 GT500 and we know the pricing for the 2012 ZL1. - What will GM do to counter the Shelby’s big numbers with the ZL1 in 2013 or 2014? - How much will a ‘fully equipped 2013 GT500 cost with all of the extra HP and performance package options? Some are saying 25% increase in MSRP. - Is it worth waiting 6 months to order a 2013 ZL1 to see what tricks are up their sleeve? - Will any ZL1 upgrades come with an increased base price tag? The interesting thing is that MSRP of a fully loaded 2012 ZL1 WITH the automatic transmission is CHEAPER than the MSRP of a similarly equipped 2012 GT500. Has ZL1 become the bargain of the two after the likely 2013 GT500 price increase?

I believe that a Z28 is still going to happen considering the fact that the big oval brought back the Boss. As with year one of the 5th gen Camaro I believe that the ZL1 probably has more horsepower than what is advertised. So It may already be at 600 HP I don't know, but just like in the 60's this will be a back and forth battle for several years each year one outdoing the other.

I guess the ultimate question is, how much horsepower does a GT500 have to have before it makes up for how ugly it looks? Hats off to Ford for making it a better car, but do something about the styling! It looks like someone took a 60s/70s hybrid Mustang and just threw a bunch of really bad aero kits on it.

The current base of the Shelby GT500 is $49,605, but I am guessing that you will not even be able to touch a new one at that price.” http://content.usatoday.com/communities/driveon/post/2011/11/fords-new-mustang-shelby-gt-first-200-mph-muscle-car-/1 The new Shelby will arrive in showrooms next summer, slightly behind the other new redone Mustangs, at a price Ford hasn't set yet. http://automotive.speedtv.com/article/autos-ford-unleashes-650hp-gt500 The GT500 is most certainly the least-expensive way to get 650 horsepower under your hood, with pricing expected to be in the $60,000 range. http://blog.caranddriver.com/chevrolet-announces-54995-price-tag-for-580-hp-camaro-zl1/</SPAN> See table. C&D Estimates $60,000

After the dust has settled on the announcement I’ve had time to consider the upgrades to the GT500. In general they are trying to match the ZL1 where there was a deficit before. I’m not sure these Band-Aids will help all that much, but kudos to Ford for upping their game. Here are my thoughts:
2013 GT500 will probably cost more than 2013 ZL1 when you add all of the performance packages. The performance packages will be required to make full use of that 650 HP. The electronically adjustable Blisten dampers are inferior to MR suspension. The Blisten’s are adjustable from the ****pit from ‘street’ to ‘track’. This effectively softens the dampening for the street and stiffens it at the track. While a nice feature, the MR actually adjusts dampening as you drive and is a far superior system. How much of the HP will actually be usable in the lower gears? They have revised the gearing but how much it will help remains to be seen. I’ve seen nothing about upgraded tires. Traction issues will still exist. GT500 Brakes are still inferior to the ZL1, although perhaps performance will be close due to the extra weight of the ZL1. Revised gearing for traction and top speed… acceleration may not be as much an improvement as expected with that 100HP boost. They added a splitter and front fascia to increase the downforce. Last time I checked this car’s weight distribution was already front heavy. Add 100HP… can you say oversteer in the high speed turns? All said and done the 2013 GT500 is impressive, but maybe not AS impressive once you start digging past the marketing fluff of the press release. Let’s let the performance decide when the cars hit the streets. By the way, both the 2013 ZL1 and 2013 GT500 are scheduled to hit the dealers in the Summer (see reference articles above). That should end all talk of 2012 vs. 2013. as they are direct competitors.

do you believe that they will make many changes between the '12 and '13 ZL1? I think there'll be slight tweeks but I don't really see there being much of a difference between the 2. just my opinion. it remains to be seen. I'd be looking at the 2014 model to have any drastic changes.
