It's official: The Ford Mustang outsold the Chevrolet Camaro in 2009, despite a string of month-on-month sales leads over the Blue Oval's pony car. But it was a close race.

According to sales data released by both Ford and General Motors, the Mustang sold 66,623 units in 2009, with GM coming in close behind with 61,618 Camaros sold for the year.

Early on, there was speculation that the Camaro could overtake the Mustang if its sales streak continued, but despite pent up demand for the bowtie brand's retromobile, Ford sold 6,327 Mustangs last month -- over 60 percent more than it did in November. Not a huge surprise, but a good showing nonetheless, and with all the updates to the 2011 Mustang, we suspect that next year's race won't be nearly as entertaining

Um, you know the Camaro was only for sale for like 2/3's of 2009. Considering that, the Camaro blew the Stang out of the water. Extrapolate it out. The Camaro wins handily.

Some of the people who brag that the Camaro outsold the Mustang for most of the months it was offered will be the same ones saying they would never buy a Mustang because they are too common.

Me personally, I say congrats to GM. They built a car that sells very well, which is one of the things they need to right the ship.

autoblog is just retarded it didn't even mention the late start ...i'm convinced like the biased mainstream media that even the auto media is biased against chevy cars and always gives the nod to jap and Euro cars and only respects the mustang and corvette as American cars

well...there's no denying that more Mustangs were sold than Camaro's in 2009 as a whole.
It would have been nice if there had been a little side bar saying that the Camaro wasn't available from Jan. 1st to Dec. 31st like the 'stang was.

they even mentioned the december sales for mustang but didn't mention it for the Camaro...its quite clear which horse this blogger prefers...The whole point is just to get the point out there to get people to spread that "mustang outsells camaro in 2009" I say we do blitz emails and at least get them to update the information and not be so misleading...
