2011 Camaro SS - AFM / Bogging / Sputtering ??? Anyone??

I have just under 3,000 miles on a brand new 2011 Camaro SS and have been experiencing a very weird/annoying noise and hesitation on take-off and when coasting and lightly accelerate.

The dealer swears it is normal and caused by the Automatic Fuel Management (AFM) system kicking in while the car is coasting or at low speeds when you accelerate; the AFM kicks on and goes from the 4 cylinders to 8 cylinders.

Their is a weird bogging noise that happens for a second before the car seems to catch up with itself. It almost seems like its sputtering, hesitating, then makes an awful sputtering sound through the exhaust. When the RPMs are high - the Camaro V8 is perfect, it's just at the low speeds and very low RPMs when you barely give the car a little gas to speed up a little, or after coasting and the RPMs drop below 2, you step on the gas to keep going - then the weird feeling and noises happen.

Super frustrating and the dealer swears it normal - anyone else experiencing this????

Please HELP!

what grade of gasoline are you using? 87 or 89 may make the car hesitate....suggest you run a tank of premium - but disconnect the battery for 20 min once you add the new gas -- the computer will 'relearn' --

If you don't want to pull the battery. Just fill up with premium then pull fuses #5 & #20 for several hrs. Pop them back in and the car will reset to high octane fuel map. As for some of the noises your hearing that would be the AFM.

Thanks - I did pull the fuses before (overnight) and not sure that was the issue.

Yes - when you are going slow and under 2k RPMs, then you lightly step on the accelerator to pick-up speed or keep going slowly, the car makes an awful sputtering type sound, almost like an old car that is out of gas. The car then makes a spitting/shuffling sound through the exhaust for a quick second, then when the RPMs and speed get up, everything is fine.

Happens when turning a corner, then give it gas after the turn to keep going, or when coasting along and give it gas like in a parking lot, or slow street....

Drive in Manual mode. AFM doesn`t kick in.

Not sure about 2011 models, but I know this does not keep AFM from kicking in on a 2010 model car.

GM says its normal. I say it a crappy system. I think that is one system that causes a dwell from the time u punch it and it actually takes off.

A tune seems to be the only way around it, but that voids your power train warranty.

I had the same problem. Hated it, but decided to go ahead and void the warranty by tuning the AFM out. Now runs great!

It's the AFM. My 2008 Silverado does the same thing, even when towing if the gas pedal has light pressure. I got used to it, but still don't like it.

AFM will still kick in for the 2011 in Sport mode... it just can be avoided obviously a bit easier.

It sounds exactly like AFM and I had the same frustration... weird sound and boggy or sluggish at low speeds or at normal take off as a daily driver..

A tune is the only thing to fix this and subsequently voiding your power train warranty. I have mixed feelings about it... one, it does suck, but GM may have avoided the gas guzzler tax for all V8s if they could present this information. I would much rather pay for the header and other goodies like a tune and even some small warranty work over paying 3k in taxes....
