AUTOX Videos
Went to an AutoX on Saturday and did ok…there is much more in the car than I got out of it. Tires came in about 36-38 which apparently is to low. I talked to a nice fellow with a beautiful 1LE and in the end he got me by a hair. First few runs in ptm5 were not great.
***BE SURE TO SWITCH TO 720 HD*** This video is an instructor driving her without me and he easily laid down a :55 and complained that the ptm5 pulled him back. Then my last 2 runs I went with everything turned off and spun right before the finish in my second to last run…it was fun! This video is my last run and I got a :58 which is getting in the right direction…watch the end as I almost take out the timing lights seemingly out of control Last edited by backtotintops; 06-09-2014 at 12:00 PM. |

Lookin' GOOD! How did the tires do? Must be some really smooth asphalt. Tires were making a lot of noise. I'd say you did really well. Pushin' a heavy car around those transitions is a lotta work. It took me half a season to learn a Mustang after driving Corvettes for a while. Stay with it, you can learn a lot driving auto-x. Somebody put together a great course there. Look forward to seeing more videos, and thanks for posting!

Don't have my Z/28 yet, but ran the '09 CTS-V yesterday on treadwear 220 tires (FS legal). 40psi was perfect for the nose, and 36psi was perfect on the rear. You could 4 wheel drift it, and still kept the shoulder tread intact.
Always start high and work down. Too much pressure saves your tires, and has a good feel to it, lots of warning. I also ran the 2013 Chevrolet Volt on electricity only on Saturday. Guess what? The '13 Volt ran just as fast as the '09 CTS-V.

EDIT! IGNORE TIRE STREET CLASS COMMENTS, Stock tires are LEGAL!!
There could be a significant issue with running SCCA Solo2 with the Z/28. They listed it as A Street (AS), which requires treadwear 140+ (2014 races), and 200+ for 2015 races. The factory tires will be illegal for AS. And I think they should have initially listed it as FS, where the 1LE cars run. After 400HP, there isn't a big advantage to more HP, and the weights are the same. The fact they put the ZL1 Camaro in AS still puzzles me. Size and weight are no advantage. A 1LE should be faster at AutoX than a ZL1, but they allow the 1LE to run with the 6-cyl Camaros. Odd. AS has the C5 Z06's in it, which are popular, light and fast. On a tight course, the Z/28 is probably not going to hang with 3080lb "405HP" vette. It's suspension is very adjustable, and it's very well balanced with an uber low CG.

interesting you say that because looking on the web the night before I picked AS referencing the ZL1 but while standing in line 2 people said no matter what engine, camaros run in FS then when I went to ask the guy on the computer to change it..he had to consult 2 other people and dig around a bit and after I told him 505hp he said it really is not classified yet but stay in AS since that is what I registered in...I didn't really care...mr miata pwned me anyway

Z/28 might not do as bad as you think in AS
Maybe they also might put it in ESP W/Hoosiers on it. Rest of 2014 you can run ASR also |

Odd. I'm trying to find the AS ruling for the Z/28, and I came across this gem:
Quote:
AS is normally for 2 seater lightweight, high power cars, like Corvettes, Vipers, 911's (those aren't REALLY back seats), NSX's, etc. The ZL1 and Mustangs do not belong in there. Nor does the Z/28 since it has 4 REAL seats, and weighs over 3500lb. Mustangs WITHOUT back seats from the factory do belong in AS though.

Not sure where the z28 will end up due to the stock tires. On stock tires it certainly does not belong in any stock class. AS on 200 tires is actually the best class for it imo. It could run in FS I guess as an equally prepped 1le will be just as fast.

Which tires did you have on for the AutoX? Definitely not Trofeo Rs based on the tire squeal, I'm assuming. Also thought AutoX rules demanded harder tires than the 60 wear-rating of the Trofeos...

yes trofeos but I should have gone higher on pressures...I'm not running for any points I just showed up to try it and since they were not sure on the classing they figured just leave it AS.

Remind me which pressures you ran? Anything over 34 and you start to feel loose, at least on a road course...
