Front wheels touching curbs because tire has no rim guard to speak of
I keep having issues with the front wheels are almost the same width as the tires, and so I have rubbed the outside face of my factory 2017 SS wheels I already spent $250:00 on wheel repairs and had scratches when had tires replaced, anyone have a solution for this? Maybe a wider tire or plastic glue on rim guards? Thanks for any ideas. 2017 SS with stock size tires on car presently, I would like to keep stock wheels.

There is no solution except To watch what you’re doing. Plenty of us have stock rims and tires and never rash a rim. But if you must, I believe there are tires that you can buy where the rubber protects the rim a bit.

You can try those rim guard protectors. Just do a general search and you'll see what they are. For me I just become more aware of what I'm driving, and exercise caution when approaching curbs and whatnot

Wheels hitting curbs
Thanks for info, love the curb feelers!, I asked tire rack for brand of tire with heaviest side wall rim guard but was told that he did not have any ideas for me, except some type wheel guard. If anyone knows of such a tire or have used a plastic guard let me know how it works, thanks topkat

Apart from keeping more distance, slightly wider tires may also help.
For example, the Michelin PS4S has a straight sidewall that overhangs the entire wheel, you'd probably feel the tire hitting first before scratching up your wheel. A rim guard rubber on the tire itself doesn't do much, unless you're super sensitive (but then you wouldn't have this problem in the first place, eh ? just teasing, with the OEM tires I curbed my wheels slightly, too).

Learn how to drive around curbs without hitting them. I have never curbed a wheel in my car, and I also have 25mm spacers.

I'm lmao that someone is blaming bashing curbs on the tires instead of being a sh*t driver

Something to consider: Anyone with a normal level of common sense will likely never curb a wheel again after doing this. Case in point is a buddy of mine. Prior to owning his Camaro he never had a car with larger wheels and lower profile tires, so he never really had to learn or consider how to drive otherwise. After curbing three wheels in the first year, he now has learned, and been fine ever since. And him not being a "car type guy" in general, he never really understood the logistics of something like this. Sometimes you have to mess up in order to not do it again

Well hell, my being 75 years old and always has cars with wider tires than wheels might just be the whole damn problem, guess I’ll go practice a ton and stop driving thru bank drive thrus but I’ll die with a hot car, guess I’m just an old car nut, thanks for thoughts, topkat

Here’s what you do , old man, (I’m 70)… Get yourself 4 Big 1L Coke bottles, fill them up with water. Take them to the mall parking lot when they’re not open, and set them and try and park, See how to see how close you can get to them. It’ll give you a perspective of where your fender is versus what’s Trouble.
And yes pulling out of a bank window/auto teller lane is where you will do the most damage I found. You always turn too quickly. |
