I always run 93 octane, and it does have a noticeable performance difference compared to the lower octane fuels.

What octane would we need to ensure zero knock? 95 octane?

Over on the 6th gen forum, there is a discussion with this same question and the consensus is 94-95 octane for zero knock retard. So, if all you have available is 91, you need 14-15 gallons of 91 mixed with 4-5 gallons of 100 octane race fuel. Of course, that's assuming approximately 18/19 gallon gas tank capacity.

Higher octane works well with higher compression engines, LfX is 11.5 to 1. Higher octane is beneficial for our motors. At most it's 10 dollars a week. I can really tell the difference when I run the air conditioner and in wot situations. Feed the beast good food!! I won't run anything but 93.

Another factor to consider is your driving conditions, as many have described. If you mostly drive with cooler ambient temperatures (northern states for example), you may not notice as much of a difference compared to someone with ridiculous IAT's that runs A/C frequently in the south. Heatsoak is an often overlooked performance killer.

I religiously run 93 and ONLY from a top tier gasoline manufacturer (if your not sure what that means, google it).

Also tuned with Overkill 93 tune.

Although not a V8 and never will be, car really does run like a top and has plenty of power.

I like VP fuel stations. Excellent gas!

These engines definitely like the higher octane. Yes they can run fine on 87 but not as peppy on the lower octane tables. I run 91 octane 100% gasoline always from OnCue.

Well damnit you guys forced me to read I read the owners manual and it simply says 87 octane or higher but do not use anything below 87. I'm gonna have to find me a good source of fuel now.

My friend claims that E85 is similar in characteristics to 93 octane but I thought it was higher than that?

Never will be a V8, but derek on here got close to 320 rwhp (316 actually) with just bolt-ons N/A and that's L99 territory. Of course, now being F.I. he has surpassed any stock or slightly modified L99 or LS3.

For being just a V6, I'm very impressed with the potential of these little engines.

The high octane table is even pushing too much timing IMO, but the best thing you can do is run higher octane to prevent the knock from being too awful. Remember, these are very high compression engines, I would treat them like one and not like it's just a "base" engine for a Camaro.

The difference in timing between high and low octane is also pretty crazy.

Low Octane Table

High Octane Table

This is spot on, which is why I have run 93 from the beginning. Now 7 years and over 100K miles. I want every HP I can get on demand when I want it. Running 87 pulls timing which means less HP.

When I use to run at the drag strip (over 170 passes) I would even add a gallon of 100+ octane to my 1/4 tank of fuel to help insure I pulled as little timing as possible to avoid knock.

If you can afford it, and run it hard, run the highest octane in your area available, IMHO.

Yes!! Thank you to all who contributed.

When I purchased my Camaro convertible, my buddy went out and got a 2011 mustang convertible V6. It has turned into a fun banter back an forth and I have beaten him a few times we have raced but this last time he was giving me a serious challenge to where his speed limiter came into play or I was probably screwed The only thing I could think would make the difference is I had fueled up with 87 ethanol blend and he was running 91 octane. He keeps modifying his car so he's going to get me soon and I can't actually tell what all he's done to his car so who knows. He's put a larger throttle body on his car, a CAI and it has axle back exhaust. So far the bone stock Camaro with the cheesy painted 18" wheels has held him off but he says he's got a diablo tuner with some custom tunes coming. That'll be the end I'm sure
