High 10s On Motor - Mods for the Masses Part 3
So back in 2014 I wrote a couple of articles on my approach to modifying my 2010 Camaro SS:
http://www.superchevy.com/how-to/eng...or-the-masses/ http://www.superchevy.com/how-to/eng...masses-part-2/ Cranking off a 12.37@112 with headers, cold air, tune, rod modded intake and a set of 20" 555 Nitto drag radials kept me happy for a couple of months. But of course the car started feeling slow again and then I lost a stop light race to a blown mustang. I added a Circle D 3200 converter and a 3.91 gear, and a set of 18" Nitto NT05R drag radials, and was able to crack FBO 11s, went 11.84@113. A year passes, and it should come as no surprise I got bored again. So I ordered up a GPI VVT SS3 cam and got Bo White to port a set of stock castings for me. I also got a set of Hooker Blackheart headers and their full 3" exhaust. I also upgraded to a Circle D 4C converter, which is somewhere around a 3800 stall. My friend Anthony Manna at JM Auto swapped over all the parts, and then I had the combo tuned by GPI and a local friend. My first pass after doing the cam, heads, converter and exhaust swap was a unimpressive 11.6. My shift points were way off. That night we got my car from 11.6 down to 11.2 which was much better. Here is an 11.13 pass: Next time out, we worked the 11.2 down to 11.teens, and then a high 11.0 pass. I also made the move to a set of 28x17 Hoosier slicks. We ran the car later that week... and that night ended with a broken diff on my very first pass on the slicks. Ordered up an Eaton TrueTrac, Anthony swapped it, and back to racing, I went. 11.10, 11.08.... 11.03. Oh baby, so close to a 10 second pass. Video of an 11.06 pass: I went out a week later, and the air was still good. We continued to play with shift points, converter lock up, and a little bit with fuel and timing. 11.01... than then 10's! I ran 7 ten second passes that night: I gave the car a break at that point, I did try running it a month later on 275 drag radials and broke a right side axle. I now have G Force axles. I'm at a cross roads, either I throw on a blower or just try to crack a 10.8 with the current mods...

There he is, John, your build was pretty inspiring when I used to be a lurker here a few years ago. I learned a lot from reading your posts! I think that it definitely paid off being able to track tune your combo and has got me thinking of doing one of GPIs track rental/tunes to get it dialed in in real time.

Track tuning made all the difference, the car made good power on the dyno but my shift points and some other timing aspects were not dialed in. A few years ago there were 4 of us in Chicago that were 11.0 and quicker, and then a ton of guys in the high 11's. I know at this point this other group of guys needed more track tuning.
Nice to hear from you!

How about trying to bump the stall to about 4400? Alot of people do 3800 with the stock cam.

It would probably run solidly in the 10.80's with more converter... But that would be a hard one for me, the car drives so nice now.

Track tuning made the difference for my Twin Turbo car as well in the 1/4. It would make awesome power on the dyno and was great for roll racing, but to really hit the #s in the 1/4 I needed tuning at the track!

The 10s stayed just out of reach but I think they were possible with stock heads if I had the track tuning. Probably won't know now, as I'll likely be having the heads ported on the next round of mods.

Local friend made 480rwhp with same cam as you, and since you have the 5C and 3.91s, all you need is traction and the shift points to run 10s I'd think.

Awesome build over the years John! I have a similar setup and have gone 11.30S.....stock heads and 3.27 rear. I have a big circle d converter and BTR stage 3 cam. I am thinking of porting my stock heads and 3.91 gears to get me in the 10s....Looking at your results gives me hope thanx!

More mods... why not right lol.
I think 3.70's would suffice too. I'm going to flush my trans fluiid, do a new filter, and make some passes this summer. I'd like to crack the 10.8s.

Thank you for doing this work. I did something similar on the LTG in the 6 forum. I am trying to kind of make a mental blueprint for STOCK class racing which is a 10.9 index. It seems like a choice series of mods will get it there. I enjoy following your posts.
