Alcantara manufacturer can't keep up with demand

Is this the material on the 1LE steering wheel and shifter?

I like the feel and look of it, but did wonder about the long-term wear. Hopefully it lasts...

I had an alcantara steering wheel, shift knob, and shift boot in my 2014 1LE and have experience with long-term wear and tear. I put 40k miles on my 1LE over 1.5 years and the material was basically worn out after 20k of those. They sell cleaning kits that work wonders on alcantara but at the end of the day it's an extra wear item in the car. The material used in my 2017 feels nearly identical. I'd go into it asking if you are willing to spend an extra $200-$300 every 20-30k miles to have the alcantara. It does look and feel great. I ended up swapping to a leather steering wheel and shifter which was really easy to do in my 2014 1LE.

I still have my 2015 Camaro 1LE (42k miles) and the steering wheel and shifter look as new as the day I bought it. The main reason for that is how easy it is to clean it, all you need is a damp cloth and a spot of soap and it looks new each time. I never use a brush on it.

I believe our cars have a knock-off Alcantera. Same synthetic suede material....just not the name brand “Alcantera”.

They need to breed more Alcanteras, Peru, I think.

I heard that the GM ultra suede is a more durable, less soft variation of alcantara that's made by the same company.

GM uses a microfiber suede. It looks just as good. A lot of this stuff is very similar, ultrasuede for example is just a branding of microfiber suede, it is the same stuff. It is all Japanese fabrics from the 1970s that caught on huge three decades later.

Perhaps some fine Corinthian Leather should be used!

I have a 2015 STI with 66,000 miles and alcantara seats, and they still look brand new. However, the leather bolsters definitely show wear.
