M6 Launch Problem
I am 73 years old and have drag raced since the early 60s, everything from a 67 Chevelle L75 to a 1988 IHRA PRO Stock GTA in the late 80s, but our 2017 m6 ZL1 is the hardest car to launch I have ever worked on. My feeling is with a 3.73 rear gear, a 2.29 1st gear and a car that weighs 2 tons or more with the driver, it needs a better rear gear say say 4.56, that would improve the launch ratio to 10.44 from 8.54, I really think this would get the M6 closer to the A10. Anyone know of any manufacturers making rear gears for our car?

I was hoping for a 4.10, but 4.56 is sounding even better.
I'm with you bud

Here we go!!
I'll save you 11 pages of time. You will NEVER NEVER NEVER launch this car the way it should launch. The ECU wont let you. The Nannies are protecting the drivetrain no matter what buttons you press. Enjoy the car, just don't go to the drags. https://www.camaro6.com/forums/showthread.php?t=505106

GM is worried about clutch warranty costs more than the driving experience.

I have learned to launch the car without burning the clutch or over burning the tires.. the biggest help has been making the intake breath better with a TB and less restrictive intake like the Vararam.. I can feather the clutch and gas well enough to get 3.7 on street tires to 60. that's close to the A10.. thats stock pressure and bridgestone tires.. it took a lot practice.. if you get the launch to 60mph good the rest is easy unless you miss a gear or something in the 1/4.

I agree the nannies are the problem, what I am trying to do is manage them or get around them the best we can, by putting a 4.56 gear we would be making it easier to get the car rolling and reducing the load on everything in front of the rear gear, driveshaft tranny and clutch, while at the same time the car would accelerate faster. We have gone a best of 11.62, but it is still very difficult to time the clutch, and accelerator application consistently, we basically try to get the car rolling 10 mph or so and then roll into full throttle, from 10 mph up the nannies do seem as concerned about torque management and the clutch, no timing or throttle position are pulled.

I saw a video of Fran tuning a C7 Z06 and he was talking about the ECU closing the throttle. I can't remember the exact numbers but they were pretty crazy. Something like the computer not allowing the throttle to open past 60% or so until 40+ MPH is achieved and even then, 100% doesn't happen until 3rd gear or something like that (I'm sure a "real" tuner will step in shortly). That's why a tune on these cars is night and day, much more than it used to be. The LT4 makes drivetrain eating torque (650 bone stock) at something like 2000-2500 RPM. That's brutal. GM knew that and dialed back the cars accordingly, rather than putting tons of extra weight into heavier drivetrain parts and drive the price up. |

Sure the ECM is causing problems, but 4:56 gears will make your cars more of a handful on the street thru the gears. the 1st place to start would be costly but if you want to slove half of your problem, Change that 1st gear to 2.66 or a 2.97. Yes your trans would haft to come out, but I bet 0-60 would be enough to make you happy, Or replace the transmission with a T56 magnum, and make over half your $ back when you sell the old one. And last thing is wait on hptuners. But a 2.29 1st will still be slow coming out of the hole. Best wishes !

Coming from someone who also has a 4th gen LT1 m6 Camaro that i upgraded. Every single drivetrain part had to be replaced at one point or another because of abuse. I am actually one of those people that like having this type of protection. I am more willing to spend 70 on mine with lower spec parts and more electronic control than not having a choice and paying another 5-10k
