Depends on what you are going to do.
Drag race- Auto
Heavily modify- Auto (mostly if you are going to race it- manual can likely take the abuse as others have pointed out)
Road course- manual (could be a toss up)
Drive for fun - manual (IMO)
Daily drive- Auto (IMO)

I don't daily drive my ZL1, but my DD is also a manual transmission. It's second nature and most of the time I don't notice it, but when I hit traffic I wish I had an auto.

At no point, in any situation, have I ever found myself saying, "Damn, I wish this car had an automatic transmission". This coming from someone that often spends 3+ hours commuting 25 miles (I work in NYC).

I don't want paddles, I don't want an auto. The fun in driving is in the feedback and engagement. If it doesn't have three pedals, I don't want it.

I found a nice 2014 ZL1 convert with 26k miles and manual... I was not impressed with the performance. Is there something I should know? The exhaust sound had a funny cadence.

What tires were present? Was the exhaust modded?

It's not a toss up when you are stuck in a 2 hour stop and go crawl on an
interstate traffic jam. Automatic is superior in so many ways.

If I had to do it all over again I would still pick the 6 spd. manual. I've been an auto tranny driver for decades, and there is something to be said for "rowing" the gears and man(handling) the clutch, especially on an accelerated run. On an empty highway the experience is thrilling!

Disagree just about as much and as vigorously as a person can possible disagree. An automatic is superior in exactly 0 ways. None. 2 hours in traffic, give me three pedals. I work in NYC and for many years spent 3 hours going each direction and my commute was a tick over 24 miles. Before that I lived in NJ, 9 miles from NYC, and commuted in with a stick there too. Easily 2 hours in each direction unless the stars aligned. Never in my life wished for a car with two pedals.

Wife has an E92 M3 with paddles; a fantastic car in many ways. Utter nonsense that is doesn't have 3 pedals and driving it is only slightly more fun than driving her Subaru B9 Tribeca.

Where do you work that it takes you 3+ hours to get into the city from Harstdale? What’s your work schedule?

The convertible ZL1's are a bit heavier than the regular coupes, so it may not feel as quick as you would think 580hp should be.

Tires on the car I tested where stock summer tires. I wasn't breaking them loose, anyway. The ZL1 convert I drove with automatic was happy to break the tires loose any time you wanted to. I don't think the exhaust has been modified. I'm going back tomorrow and drive it again.

Maybe I've gotten too used to my Porsche. I know a 6 speed manual won't come close to shifting like a dual clutch paddle shift automatic. But I would think the additional 170 hp would more than offset the extra 1000 lbs weight. Unfortunately, that doesn't seem to be the case.

Well, the stock summer tires on a Z in the past week will track like greased plastic. For the life of me, I truly don't understand how you can "test the performance" on a Z with "stock summer tires" in SE Wisconsin January.

I worked for ShytiGroup for 7 years at 390 Greenwich (downtown, right off the West Side highway). Would drop the wife off at Ernst & Young in Times Square along the way. It was about an hour slower by car than train -> train -> train, but I despise using public transportation and being stuck to their schedule, so I used a car for the last two years before finally finding a better gig in Stamford, CT (where i am now).
