How do they paint them?

I watched a special on how BMW makes the Z4. Very interesting. The completed body gets dunked into a hot phospate mineral tank, magnetically charged, dipped into a primer tank, washed, baked, painted baked, clear coated, and baked again. In between steps the body is dusted with ostrich feathers numerous times. All is done on a conveyer by robots.

Is this common practice among manufacturers?

How is the camaro done?

No that is not common practice. It may bee on 50K plus cars, but it sure isnt for GM. Most cars roll down a conveyor and into a paint booth where several robotic arms shoot color to it.

Actually Dave, What Kalel mentioned in his post IS how it's done across the board for every vehicle that comes out of GM more or less.

they go into a phosphate bath, ELPO dip, they are dusted with ostritch feathers in between steps "they are a pain in the ass to fix if they get stuck to the bodies and painted over "my job as a paint repair tech".

The paint in the car plant is electrically charged as well as the primer. All waterbased paint instead of laquer paint as well.

What you saw at the BMW plant on TV, i think it was Ultimate Factories " i seen it too" is how we do it as well with a few minor adjustments/steps.

When you seen the guys in the paint booth wearing the blue overalls "smurf outfits" wetsanding out defects and buffing the bodies to a shine is where i started off doing in truck paintshop and car before i moved up the ladder of asskissing.

Zedder,

How much clear will be on the car if we want to color sand? Is there enough on the car to be able to remove some of the orange peel?

I wouldent recommend you doing it yourself at home. You can very easily burn through the clear and screwup your paint. IF you REALLY want it done, take it to a pro shop and pay the labour. IF you have the ability to do it at home, you WILL need a high speed buffer with a FOAM 3M pad, and a few of them depending on how much sanding your doing. To wetsand, you will also need diamond dust 3M pads and 3M diamond dust polish. Thats the same stuff we use, but it's hard to find out of the factory, so i stock up in the factory, wait, nm lol

As for clearcoat, I can't really say how many Millimeters are applied.

I'll have to slide you a few bills to run the clear coat robots twice on my car.

Yes, that was the episode. It was very cool. On the Z4, the painting process adds about 20 pounds to the car. Probably twice that for the camaro.

Thanks Zedder, for the info.

I have never done the Zaino thing, but does that fill in the orange peel problem after a few coats? Does anybody here know?

You can't "fill in" orange peel. Zaino is great, but it's no miracle product. Wet sanding is the only real way of reducing orangepeel and, even then only if the defects are slight. As mentioned previosuly, this process is best left to a professional unless you know what you are doing.
