how is it that the lighter driveshaft would be able to increase the power output? not too familiar with this.

The rule of thumb is for every 1 lb. rotating mass weight reduction is like an overall drop of 10 lbs. This then can be converted to a rule of thumb that for every 100 lb. weight drop is like a 0.1 faster 1/4 mile. So all that said; drop 10 lbs of rotating mass weight (2.5 lbs. per wheel for example) gets you the 0.1 second drop in the 1/4 mile.
