Bigger stall question

Please forgive me as I’m a bit of a noob when it comes to modifying a transmission. I’m looking at adding a higher stall converter to my Camaro. There’s a shop that I inquired to do the work and they said that I didn’t need a retune for a higher stall. It just seems odd that a big mod like this wouldn’t require a re-tune but is it true? A new converter with a higher stall doesn’t require a retune?

Your transmission and converter will require a tune in order to operate properly and shift at optimal rpms.

If you have hptuners and the bluecat tool it will take about 20min. Including drive time to make the adjustment.

Don't get a Hughes.

Get a real good triple disc lock up converter from a company thats proven.

FTI Yank or Circle D make good ones.

You will need to get a tune but you should get 4-5 tenths in quarter mile.

Don't forget the large trans cooler.

Thanks guys. I’ve been looking at Circle D as most shops I’ve talked to recommended them. The debate is single disc or triple disc. The argument made to me was NA power single disc, boosted triple disc.

NicKey, assuming that’s your Camaro in your avatar, how would the transmission shift at different rpms than it does now with the converter? Again, I’m a noob on trans modifications, but wouldn’t the rpms still be dictating the shift points?

You don't need a triple disk.

What setup are you running now? What stall speed are you thinking?

FYI, once you stall, you will think your car is a rocket ship.

I'm still on my stock converter. I know I should have done a stall with my cam swap, but I didn't have the money at the time for all of it so I went with a cam that could utilize the factory stall without too much issue, but I'm wanting to do things right now that I'm near the cost of a new one.

The converter will not change your shift rpms, but a tune will optimize how the converter works and can optimize your shift points to take advantage of your modifications. You asked if you need a tune with a converter change / stall and the answer is yes, if you want to optimize your set up / combination.

10-4! Thank you sir! I thought it would need a retune, but was confused when the shop said I didn’t. The other thing that confused me was when one shop said a bigger trans cooler wasn’t needed. Every other place has suggested a bigger cooler, but this shop is supposed to be one of the best. Not quite sure I believe that rumor anymore.

Definitely do the cooler! My temps NEVER go above 180 and I daily with a 3200 converter.

I have a BTR stage 2 NA cam on a stock converter currently. It does fine, but I know there's potential left on the table. I'm looking at a 3200 stall. I was told I could go as high as 3600 or 3800, but it would be pushing the limits of what would be reasonable for the cam.

I'd go at least a 3600!

Go big on the converter. It will pay off in the end. Also, trucool 40k cooler works wonders. I run a big stall, 4300-4500 area and my trans has never seen a temp above 180 with that converter
