Pure Acetone to help Gas Mileage?
The last tip in the video talks about putting 2 ounces of PURE acetone into a 10 gallon gas tank which increased gas mileage by about 9 MPG! Anyone know if this trick actually works?

I'd skip it. Acetone EATS most seals. It's one hell of a solvent. Wanna risk a $35,000.00 car over a few MPG? I wouldn't.

Busted by the Mythbusters in both Carb and EFI engines 3 years ago. Made mileage WORSE by their numbers.

I especially enjoyed this part of the page you linked to:
"Acetone and Your Engine Acetone is known to deteriorate cheap plastics and other substances. While the components in a car's fuel system should be of high quality, and thus immune to any deleterious effects from exposure to acetone, be aware that "ideal" is not always the case in practice. Be advised that not all systems have been tested against acetone. Until such thorough testing has been accomplished and certified by a accredited authority, you assume your own liability for experimentally testing acetone in your particular system. " 'Nother link: http://peswiki.com/index.php/Directo..._Fuel_Additive Cautions Keep acetone away from painted surfaces. It is the key ingredient in paint remover. Acetone is a poisonous substance with dangerous vapors, similar to gasoline. Banned Vietnam officially bans acetone as additive in gasoline [dead link] - Acetone is a solvent that can be used as an additive for boosting octane levels in gasoline. However, a high amount of acetone in gasoline can affect the rubber seals of vehicle engines, and is being blamed for the large-scale breakdown of motorcycles in Ho Chi Minh. (Platts; Sept. 8, 2006) Glencore Singapore to recall acetone-tainted gasoline from Vietnam (International Herald Tribune; September 12, 2006) Go for it Champ; just make sure you have the money to fix it in case you break something! |

I can't understand how it would help mileage ... I think it has a lower energy density than gasoline.

For its energy density to matter, it would have to help by being a fuel. The theories supporting acetone use as a fuel additive tend to be about chemical reactions, catalyzation, cleaning, or changing the combustion process...not about it as a fuel.
I don't believe it helps. I like to find ways that I can save gas, and I like to understand how to do stuff that I wouldn't even want to do, so I give it quite a bit of thought and effort. Here's a good link busting the acetone as a fuel economy improver idea: http://www.fuelsaving.info/acetone.htm

I would NEVER put acetone in my fuel, several reasons really. the stuff is volatile. like rediculously volatile. it would evaporate out faster than you could use 1/4 of the tank, thus only giving you the advantage for a short time. Acetone is also a hell of a solvent, so the bladder in the gas tank, the fuel lines, the injectors, seals, everything derived from a petrochemical would be corroding away. third the stuff is very hydrophillic. nothing like absorbing water from the air and pumping that into your engine. there is more but really acetone just sounds like a bad idea to me.

I don't use acetone (as I mentioned above) and am a skeptic, but I think there's a few things to address here...

Does anyone know if there's a measure of volatility? Quote:

Worse than methanol, too? If you somehow manage to have water in your gas, you put Drygas or HEET in, which is (usually) methanol, whose purpose is specifically to absorb as much water as possible. Any water in the air in your gas tank is going into your engine, whether it goes through the ethanol that comes in your gas, any additive you put in, or if it just condenses and gets sucked into the fuel pump without binding to something flammable. You want it bound to something flammable (like ethanol, methanol, or acetone if you're one of those silly people who would try acetone).
