UP IN A CLOUD OF SMOKE UPDATE!!! NOT GOOD
UP IN A CLOUD OF SMOKE UPDATE!!! NOT GOOD
I figured i would take some more pics of inside cylinder #5. I was able to manipulate the camera to get more shots and this is what i see. This was not in the original post of up in a cloud of smoke conclusion. Looks like part of the piston is gone....where did it go, down in the oil pan i guess, but how did it make it past the rest of the lower ring lands?

I am trailering the car down to Dallas once my LSX motor is built and need the car to be able to run to get it on the trailer. Then we will break down this motor and figure out what happened. all the other pistons/cylinders look good, just #5.....bad injector???
Believe it or not, the car runs fine as is, just has erratic AFR readings, no noises, vibrations etc. Will not run it again till time to drive it on the trailer

Most of the piston melted away IMO. I had a buddy run his boat for a whole weekend with it blowing oil out of the breathers (supercharged BB).
Ran fine (a little rough and down on power) right up on to the trailer (at the end of the weekend), pulled plugs, found oil on a 2 of them and took it home. Pulled the motor apart a couple weeks later and found 2 of the pistons melted. The CC looked fine, pieces weren't bouncing around. Last edited by 2SSLincolnSS2; 04-06-2012 at 05:20 PM. yup just melted it unlike detonation where it breaks it apart and bounces around everywhere

Wow, what would cause it to melt. I understand detonation, and the metaphor of taking a hammer to the pistons. but just this one cylinder, part of the piston melts, what would cause this. Seems maybe a complete lack of fuel to this particular cylinder?

LincolnSS2 has it right. It melted away and went out your exhaust valve through the exhaust. If you have cats you will see the melted debris stuck in them.

Bull, I wouldn't even start that car any more. This is like plaque in your arteries right now. One piece breaks off, it'll take more than just resleeving!

Im thinking a very lean condition in this cylinder alone. Can only think of a bad/faulty injector. I do need to run it again to get it on the trailer but will only be at idle for a couple minutes.
Something got really hot in here and i am lucky it just vaporized and went out the pipes. If it broke off, i would have been walking home. Anyone experts out there know what could have caused it. I am pretty sure it was not the tune. The evidence so far just doesnt point to that.

Well just like supercharged carburated motors, if it's lean it'll take out the weakest first and not necessarily all of them. At the same time with carburated / open manifold some cylinders may get more fuel / different charges.
Not sure on this motor... |

here's me thinking out loud, not melted but from scaling this piece of piston that is missing, it looks to be about an inch or less of a chip. Could it have broke off and been evacuated out the exhaust valve. The pics magnify everything but if you scale the missing piece it almost looks like it could have been chucked out the back end. No cats and no mufflers on my exhaust, just some dimples poked in 3in pipe that stainless works monikers it as a "retro" exhaust.
Look at how sharp the edges are on the missing piston, if it was melted it would be rounded off, not sharp/jagged like the pics shows. What say the experts?

CAST piston + BOOST +BOOST+CAST piston = carnage...and not enough injector.

When my motor went it blew one of my heads apart and spark plugs were eaten. All of it went thru the motor and out the rear. Its amazing how a motor can eat parts and shoot them out the exhaust. I look at it as a positive because now you get a kickass LSX motor.

I recall Mr. Jannetty saying something about larger injectors even though yours weren't at full duty cycle.
