3.91 gear cost
Who has done an auto gear swap to 3.91s?
I'm in E-tx and I need some work done to my car and figured I could take advantage and have new gears installed. Wife approved it so I said yes and just got an invoice for $1750 for just the gear install. Does the attached invoice seem fair? Last edited by chuckie669; 08-16-2018 at 08:56 PM. |

I got a quote for $1500 for my install and went to another reputable mechanic that charged me $800. Look around, the install prices are alot different between mechanics from what I've found. Although I brought my parts in for them to install. I found a 3.91 gear for $250 that someone purchased but never installed.

One of the guys in my Camaro group had this done at the Chevy dealer and paid around 1200 for everything including the computer stuff.
Your price seems a little high to me.

Or wait and buy the complete diff from someone selling. I got the entire diff for 800 then sold my 3.45 diff for 500. Only 300 bucks out of pocket.

That seems steep to me. I paid like $800 for my 4.10s, the install kit, and the LPW diff cover (which was $240 of that). I then paid $500 for the install - I got a bit of a break there. Still, at full cost, if you take out the LPW cover, I'd probably only be around 1200-1300.

Everything seems itemized out and upfront. Just trying to understand the cost as I'm not used to paying others to work on my car. I don't have the ability to do this work myself. Does that read as 9 hours labor to remove the pumpkin, set up gears and reinstall?
I was reading about just buying a complete 1le diff which would save on a lot of labor, but those all seem to go for 1100-1400 now which really doesn't end up much different Last edited by chuckie669; 08-15-2018 at 09:22 PM. |

I paid about 1k for everything. If you buy a 1le diff are you a m6 or a6? Manuals have different parts

Op the shop that did mine has a gear and suspension shop they work with. The gear shop has a few diffs in stock with different gear set ups. My shop simply removed my diff and replaced it with one that had the 391s already installed Then sent my diff in as an exchange. I think it was around $1400.

I had the Chevy dealer down the street put mine in and it was $477 for the labor, $58.68 for the oil, and I provided the gear kit. The gear kit with seals, bearings, bolts additive etc was about $450. All in it was around $1,000 for me, so $1,700 seems steep to me.

A friend did my 4.10 Install after hours at the dealership for a case of beer. I guess I owe him a couple more cases

Out of curiosity, what all did they do? Just 3.91 kit? I'm looking at 4 components for my primary charges. the kit, then the bearing set. Removal and install of pumpkin and setting up the gears.
I'm having my driveshaft, repaired/ replaced too so that won't be a labor cost twice. So that's good |

Ok, question for you guys, I am going to do the 3.91 gear swap in my L99 that is stalled and cammed with a custom dyno tune, if I have my dealership does the install our Camaro club gets 15% discount on parts and labor, I can get it done for a good price I think, going with the GM Performance kit that has everything, my question is when they flash my computer to correct the speedo for the gear change, will that interfere with my tune we have on the trans now? For the stall and shift points? Or would I have to drive down to my builder / tuner to have the trans retuned. Just wondering. Thanks guys..
