L99 to ls3 conversion: Cam question

If I do the L99 to LS3 conversion, do I need to chose a l99 specific cam still? Or can I now use ls3 cams?

Yes if you do the conversion you will use a LS3 cam. They have came along way with VVT cams though. Some really great options to utilize your L99.

I've heard you're better off going ls3 conversion and you'll make more power that way...

Mid to upper rpm, yes, but lower rpm's might lose some power according the cam choice.

If you have a shop near you willing to tune the vvt cam i would not do the full LS3 conversion. Take a look at the forum's fast list, majority of the fastest automatics have a vvt cam. Gwatney Performance Innovation seem to have the vvt figured out on these cars.

IIRC, it was an LLSR with lots of lift that took one of their Camaros into the 9s.

L99 to ls3 conversion: Cam question

That's an old wives tale. Think about it, if that were true then most modern advanced performance engines would not run VVT, but they do. So not more power without it, no. As much peak power is possible, definitely.
Unlikely without VVT it would have as much power across the RPM range. But it is in tuning the torque model that gives VVT its advantage.
