good performance from quiet exhaust?

I know very little about exhaust systems, but is it possible/does anyone make exhaust that doesn't really make the car much louder but gets you a similar performance gain to the loud ones? Or is it one of those things where the simple fact of making a less restrictive muffler causes the noise to increase?

I don't think the "loud" performance exhausts are yielding that big of a gain over stock. maybe a few horses at higher RPMs. Probably would have to go all out and do headers plus the cat back exhaust to see a worthwhile power gain.

If you don't want the noise there is no reason to change the exhaust system. I agree with Bond2 so far what I've read from the other threads there isn't much gain with a new system unless you go all out.
